T7: Of Parties and Peril
Singing softly under her breath, Alyia got her day started early, waking with the soft light of the rising sun streaming through the floor to ceiling windows that looked out across the stretch of beach beyond. The beach house was no longer an empty hull of a dwelling, since Alyia had moved in she had decorated to her hearts content, making it a home instead of simply a place for habitation. Shells and starfish decorated the walls beside collages of picture frames filled with photos that made the dragoness thrum in delight whenever she passed them.
Calmness had resumed through the western cost of British Columbia after the last incident was resolved with the help of the torchwood team.
Their usual schedules of patrolling and gathering with local communities once began became the norm. This week Alyia and James were scheduled to work from the comfort of their beachside home on the eastern coastline of Vancouver island. Tara Stonewell had begun her apprenticeship with the doctors of the T7 clan and she had completed her first few weeks and was settling in comfortably.
The coffee pot was already percolating, a backdrop to the little tune she was humming as she grabbed a bagel and cut it in half. Tossing it up in the air she expertly toasted it with one burst of flame, catching it on a plate and topped it with butter with a side of fruit. Being smaller than the other dragons, she was quite a bit more dexterous in the kitchen and loved the joy of this kind of thing. Having wings and a semi-prehensile tail helped as well, shutting cabinets and opening drawers while keeping her paws free for other things. She had become quite the master of the space, her usual clumsiness vanished when she was in the zone.
She already had a cup of tea for herself steaming on the counter, smelling of bergamot and vanilla. She took a quick bite of her healthier breakfast before wiping down the counter.
Perking up at the sound of James’ entrance into the world of the awake, she grabbed his favourite mug from the cabinet and set to gathering the rest of the man’s breakfast.
A short time later Alyia set down the man’s breakfast and morning coffee, just as he liked it, on the side table next to where he sat reading the news. His focus on this daily task was unbroken but he seemed to acknowledge the presence of caffeine as he had taken the mug and took a sip.
The little dragoness’s hazel eyes were hopeful and bright as she settled next to the man on her spot on the hardwood floor. She looked up at him, not speaking but almost willing him to turn to her and see that she had a question she was hesitant to ask. She seemed to be holding back just blurting out all together, waiting as patiently as she could.
"Ta Lass, best way ta start the daay, with the sun, we doon’t see it often in Scootland," James said taking a sip and reading the morning papers.
She seemed to latch onto his mention of the beautiful weather, her smile brightening.
“Oh, sir I agree!” she said, scooting a little closer but still remaining on the floor, “The sun is supposed to be around all week and get even warmer on the weekend. It would be the most wonderful weekend for a barbeque party. Could we please host at ours? It would be wonderful to have a little gathering in a setting that’s not the base. I think it would be wonderful, don’t you?” asked the dragoness with apprehensive hopefulness.
James looked up from his paper and gave the young dragoness a look, "Ya determined to hoost aren’t ya Lass?" James replied, with a lack of enthusiasm.
“I think it would be really nice for Tarok to have a birthday celebration away from the base. It’s a special one and he has always had them at the facility… it would be a nice change and I would love to help cook for everyone.”
James sighed with disapproval but he could sense she wanted to do this for the bipedal dragon, normally he would not do this sort of thing but James sensed her hopefulness, "Ack, Fiine Lass yoou win, we av a birthday party for the blue raptor ere," James said finally relenting to the dragoness.
“Ah, thank you sir!” she said, thrumming happily. Moments like these she often had the urge to nuzzle him affectionately but knew the man was not pleased with overt affection. Instead she had adapted to a gesture of dipping her head and smiling while thrumming her happiness for all to hear.
“I promise it will be fun! I’ll ensure your favourites are served too and all our friends will be here so that’s certainly a reason to enjoy!”
She seemed so happy but suddenly she sat upright and her eyes popped open, “Oh! So much to be done! I’ll call the base and ensure everyone can come, Saturday at 5 you think?” she said but really wasn’t waiting for his answer. Bouncing to her feet she trotting off, making mental lists of everything that needed to be done.
"James shakes his head lightly, "I'm in charge of the meat Lass, man thing!" James shouted into the house to the dragoness as he shook his head and continued reading.
“A barbeque you say? How did you manage to convince James to agree to that?” asked Alex, smiling through the screen of their video call later that morning. He was sitting in the command center, she could see, and a few of the others seems to be busy at work behind him.
“Oh it didn’t take much, sir. He’s very excited too,” she beamed.
Alex hid a laugh behind a hand, pretending to rub at his jawline, “Oh I’m sure he is. Should we bring anything?”
“No, I’ve got it all covered, just bring yourselves,” chirped the dragoness.
“Alright, don’t go overboard, okay?”
“I’ll try. I am so excited to have you all over. Anyway I better go get some things together. It’s only a few days away. See you later, commander sir!”
She signed off and looked down at a piece of paper, adorned with her list of items needed for the event, “Alright, invites are complete, time for a little grocery shopping…” she said, folding the paper and slipping it between a scale behind her crest for safekeeping.

With the day beginning with beautiful weather in British Columbia, Korrin and Kris were on early morning patrol, they scoured the islands of Quadra and kept an eye for anything that was amiss or anything that stood out, however much to the green dragon’s chargin there was nothing but birds flying and a gentle breeze from the sea.
The patrol was quiet and uneventful, Kris had decided to have a break on one of the islands as it was quiet and no action, they landed on one of the smaller islands where there was densely packed trees all huddled together on this small island.
Korrin landed and Kris got off and settled down under the trees. Getting out his sandwiches and other goodies from his rucksack as he leaned against the base of the tree, looking outward while munching on his sandwiches Kendra had made him.
Kendra always made sure the team were well prepared and fed well on their active duties with snacks also for the dragons as well, with diets catered specifically for the dragons, Korrin was easier than Tarok as he could not eat meat and was on a stricter diet.
Korrin meandered through the trees, his horns catching in the low hanging branches as he sought to amuse himself with turning over small stones and fallen logs in search of anything that might catch his interest.
Kris looked over his shoulder at the green dragon, looking around.
“bored, are you? Flicking over logs and rocks as if they aren’t anything, if you come here you can have half a sandwich” Kris offered to Korrin.
Korrin looked up and smiled, taking the offered snack, "the patrol isn't anything exciting today. I guess I am bored."
Kris nodded lightly in agreement.
“Yes, not as much action as Torchwood 5, I can see how those guys are sharp and on point, seems they deal with some incident a day, I’m sure they have quiet times” Kris lightly laughed, imagining Ardon being bored and bugging Jack.
"They do, Ardon assures me. But you're right. They are rather occupied with everything that happens there," agreed the dragon, sitting down.
Kris looked at the green dragon and smiled a little.
“You have grown again it seems, each Summer I feel your broadening out and getting bigger, your looking even more fearsome, having to upgrade you from the tank to the Sherman tank” Kris grinned.
"Who is Sherman?" inquired Korrin, turning his head towards the man.
Kris shook his head, amused by Korrin’s question, clearly, he had not read up on human history like Alyia had done, her head in books and tablets reading up.
“It was a type of tank used by the Yanks, it was a tank that could basically rumble and was pretty robust, able to smash through buildings and obstacles with ease and keep ploughing on” Kris explained as well as he could to the green dragon.
"Oh, I see," replied the dragon, subtly arching his neck proudly at the comparison.
Kris could sense from the link Korrin was proud of the words he said.
“Glad to be bonded to someone that determined and focused, pretty much keeps me on point with tasks, even though I tell you to go shoving stones into the sea” he joked lightly with the young dragon before him.
"You ARE a weirdo, Kris," grinned Korrin, snorting to make the man's hair go flying.
Kris laughed lightly as he pushed the dragons muzzle away from him, to stop the dragon mucking up his hair.
The green dragon laughed and settled comfortably, yawning. "So what now?" he inquired.
Kris got up and stretched lightly.
“Well, there is nothing here that could be a challenge for you, so I guess its back to patrol along the northern route and then head for home, got another 2 hours of patrolling left” Kris said, looking at his watch.
"Alright," said the dragon, looking around the clearing in which they sat. He suddenly got a sly look and jumped to his feet before vaulting into the air leaving Kris on the ground below. "What are you doing? Come on, we've got work to do!" he teased, circling above him.
Kris laughed as he got his rucksack back on and looked up.
“You sly one, bet you cant get me” Kris said as he ran into the thick woods the opposite direction to where the dragon was flying above him.
"Hey!" shouted Korrin, the game turned back on him somehow. He barred his teeth in a grin and gave pursuit. It was difficult to see the man run through the thick forest canopy but he could hear him crashing through the brush.
"Vancouver can hear you from here, you're not very stealthy, Kris!" he yelled from above.
Kris grinned as he saw a place where he could hide, running there and taking cover under a thick log and kept low to the ground, hearing the dragon’s wings flapping above as the woods became silent.
"Oh damn it," Korrin muttered to himself, realizing he couldn't hear the man any longer.
Tuning into his other senses he dove low over the trees.
He let out a deep crackle of a predatory growl to let Kris know he wasn't going to win this one.
Kris kept low and hidden, not giving his dragon an easy win, the ma was silent as the dragon sought him out.
Korrin looped around a tall standing cedar tree and flew as quietly as he could to try to hear anything below.
He caught something on the wind and tilted his wings to the left, dicing down into a tight clearing. He landed and lowered his head, looking around and drawing in breath. A dragon in the full appearance of hunting.
Kris remained quiet and quietened down his breathing, keeping close to the ground, using his training when he was in the army and cadets to keep hidden and quiet from his dragon, he was indeed close but Kris kept silent.
Korrin gave a knowing smile as he slowly turned away and pretended to lumber off in a different direction before suddenly turning and pouncing on a fallen log. He hefted it up revealing his Attilu hiding behind it. Korrin grinned, "Surprise," before tossing away the trunk.
Kris seemed surprised as he rolled away as the dragon seemed amused.
“How the heck did you move that? It was covered in moss and looked weighty, that is crazy” Kris said, his tone one of surprise and astonishment what his dragon had just done, the man was finding Korrin could surprise him at times.
"Doesn't matter. I found you," he said. "Now YOU'RE it," he said, poking him in the chest with a talon.
Kris gave him a sly look, “Oh yeah?, we tag this” Kris said looking to nudge Korrin a bit so he could run off again but he hit Korrin with his own shoulder, the dragon was solid and Kris literally bounced off the dragon as he landed with a heavy thump awkwardly on the ground.
A laugh burst from Korrin's jaws but was immediately cut off as he realized the man had hurt himself. He lowered his head to him, "Are you okay?" he asked.
Kris nodded lightly, checking himself.
“Yeah, I’m fine just shaken from the collision, I know how Ardon felt running into you” Kris said rubbing his head slightly, noticing a cut on his elbow.
"Looks like we'll have to amputate. Here, I'll do it," said Korrin, sounding rather serious as he opened his jaws.
Kris laughed lightly, putting is hands up to grab the dragons jaws, “Still wanting to play my dragon?, I told you I can take as much as you can dish out” he chuckled lightly.
"It appears you've had enough," chuckled Korrin, "Come on, let's finish our patrol before you get banged up anymore."
Kris stuck out his tongue.
“Chicken, got to bring the fun to the end, I would not be a good atillu if I couldn’t take a few knocks” Kris said getting up from the ground.
"I could knock you into next week but what guardian would do that to his Attilu? Even one with a thick skull like yours," he laughed.
Kris laughed lightly, “Ok, lets get on with patrol and then home, to get a scolding from Jon for mucking about” the man sighed as he got back on the riding harness on Korrin’s back as they took off to resume their patrol.
Korrin resumed the tracked patrol route as they continued their routine, Kris was settled in the harness as Korrin flew on, with some silence between them before Korrin spoke.
"You said that you were happy bonded to me," said Korrin, looking over his shoulder, "I feel the same way. I'm lucky."
Kris gave a small smile and patted Korrin on the side.
“I am glad, we make a great team, though I expect you to come out on top if and when you and Ardon perhaps have a round “ Kris lightly teased the green dragon.
"Yeah, yeah," replied Korrin with a small smile.
Kris checked his watch before he took out his binoculars to continue his duties as Korrin flew above the islands and the sea.
Meanwhile in Torchwood 7’s labs Dr Charles was catching up on some reports while it was quiet and helping their youngest member of the team, Tara with her workbook that the man had made for the girl the things needed for working on the base, Dr Charles was impressed with her determination and scientific like approach to the scenario’s presented.
Tara hunched over her workbook, pen scribbling industrially across the page. She suddenly frowned and paused, rereading something.
"Doctor Charles...." she said, still trying to figure out the problem even as she asked for help, "I'm not sure what this means here." she said, pointing to something on the page.
The doctor came over to the young girl’s desk and looked at the page Tara was pointing at.
“That is the equation for calculating metabolic rates, its been modified for dragons and regardless of the breed the same equation can be used” the man explained.
"Really? All dragons?" she asked, surprised, thinking of the vast differences between dragons like Vonriir and Veyron.
Dr Charles nodded.
“Indeed, pretty handy, you got professor Goodwin to thank for that, she worked it out and it means we do not use separate equations for each dragon breed, then Dr Hinton put it into our main computer, so it does much of the complex calculations but it is good to know the equation” the man explained to Tara.
"That's genius," remarked Tara, trying to commit the equation to memory. "The more I learn the more I realize that I have so much catching up to do."
Dr Charles smiled kindly.
“Your doing exceptionally well Tara, I have been most impressed by your dedication and your work ethic, I think you got the makings of a fine Doctor, but as you are under my tuition I think its time for a break, refresh your mind” the man said to the young lady.
The girl smiled a put down her pen, "Alright. I could use a break before all the numbers start running together."
“Yes, it can feel like that, I try and do it in bitesize chunks for you, but I think that is enough for today on the theory, you done some practical work yesterday, I think an afternoon of social time, having some food, fresh air and exercise will help rest your mind ready for tomorrow” Dr Charles said to Tara, putting her workbook in the draw.
"Alright, thanks again, Doctor Charles. I'll catch up with you again tomorrow to finish off that workbook," Said Tara, getting up and heading out.
Dr Charles nodded as he went back to his own work, having a small smile on his face at Tara’s dedication to learning, it pleased him that she had joined and taken up the professor’s offer of studying at the facility.

Sitting on the couch with her tablet propped up on her knees, Amanda typed away with her brow furrowed at the screen.
“You know, you look like you’re about to give someone a good talking to when you are focused on typing,” came a voice, jolting her out of her trance.
“What? Oh, my dad always said the same thing. I’ve always had this intense look when I’m writing.,” she said with an embarrassed smiled as she looked up at her dragon.
“Just means you’re extra focused,” Tarok grinned.
“If you say so,” laughed Amanda before sighing, “There’s so much to fill out here. Who knew this job would mean so much paperwork?”
“Still filling out those reports?”
“I think I will be until my dying day, either that or until my fingers fall off from all this typing.” She said, pausing to flex her fingers and rub at her wrists with a wince.
“Do they really need all this?” the dragon inquired, swerving his neck about and tilting his head to read over her shoulder.
“Yeah, apparently. With you and I participating in SAR, every call we respond to needs to be given a report to go along with it. Record keeping and all that legal nonsense you know.”
“Who knew saving lives could be so much work?” teased Tarok. She smiled and pushed his nose away from the screen.
“A lot of work, Blue. Now you distracted me, where was I?”
“You should take a break, let’s go fly to Bold Point and I can get some oysters.”
Amanda made a face, “Yuck.”
“Yum!” insisted the dragon, nosing her shoulder, “Come on, just a short break.”
“You’re going to be shore hunting for hours if we go. I have a deadline for these,” she said, gesturing to her tablet helplessly.
Tarok made to grab the device with his teeth, “Oh no you don’t!” shouted Amanda, grabbing at it. “Go find Kris and Korrin on patrol, burn off some of this energy you’ve got boiling over.”
“Hello,” came a voice as Tara walked into the room, seeing Amanda holding the tablet to her chest and trying to fend off the coastal with her foot, “What’s….. going on in here?”
“I am trying to get heaps of work done but my dragon here is being a pest,” said Amanda, trying to be stern but losing out to s smirk.
“I am not,” snorted the blue male.
Suddenly Amanda’s eyes lit up, “Say, Tara are you working with the professor at the moment?”
The girl shook her head, “No, I’m done for the day.”
“Do you want to go fly the island with Tarok?” offered Amanda.
Tara tried not to look too excited, “Oh, sure! If You want to, that is,” she said, looking at the dragon.
“Fine by me if my Attilu is just going to sit about all day.” He said, getting to his feet.
Amanda pretending to swing her tablet at him, “I’m working. Not sitting about you big blue lizard. Go stretch your wings for a bit so I can actually get some work done.”
Tarok laughed and gestured to Tara with a flip of his muzzle.
“Come on, I can show you Bold Point.”
“He’s going shellfishing so bring a book, you’ll be out there all afternoon,” called Amanda from the couch.
Tara hurried so that she could catch up with the dragon’s long strides as they headed to the air dome.
She helped put on his harness and eagerly got aboard. Soon enough he burst out into the beautiful blue sky above. Flying across the island to its southeastern side, Tara could see a number of lakes glittering below, the dusty remains of old roads from when the island used to be inhabited by other people.
Tara smiled the whole flight. She loved Icarus and had flown with him often across their property under glittering Montana skies but this was different. Flying in the middle of the day, seeing a whole different part of the world was an experience that thrilled her every time. The dragons of T7 were kind and let her fly with them every so often. Aylia asked her often as well, seeing as James rarely flew if he could help it.
“It’s so pretty over here,” she commented, leaning over the side of the saddle to look as they came over the little inlet.
“Good for oysters too,” commented Tarok, flaring his wings and slowing them down. He landed on the remains of an old dock and it wobbled under his weight. His wings were spread for balance as he waited for the floating dock to steady. Tara dismounted and unclipped the paddle board and oar they had attached to his harness.
He took off his riding rigging so that it wouldn’t be damaged by the salt water and deposited it in a heap on the old deck boards.
“I’ll be just there,” said the dragon, pointing to a small island in the middle of the inlet, only a dozen meters away. “You can paddle around the island if you like. They used to farm oysters here and they’re plentiful now that they aren’t harvested.”
“Hmm, go enjoy that shell goop,” Tara said, making a face.
Tarok laughed and jumped into the air, sending the dock rocking back and forth.
Tara got the board in the water and followed him out into the inlet. The little cove was protected and the water was calm here, clear enough to see down into the shallows where the shellfish made the bottom appear bright turquoise.
She watched with interest as the dragon wallowed into these shallows, using his deadly long claws on his hind leg to pry open the sharp shells.
His head would resurface with his prize in his jaws before moving on for more.
Tara paddled about and could see small perch hiding under the dock and anemones
floating in the current below. It was a magical place, full of life.
“Are you excited for your party this Saturday?” she asked when he lifted his head above the waves again.
“Yeah, I’m surprised Alyia managed to convince James to host,” said the dragon.
“It will be fun, I’m certain of it. I was so excited to be invited.”
‘Oh course you’re invited. You’re part of the team now,” replied the dragon.
Tara smiled at this. She never imagined in her wildest dreams that she would be working with dragons.
She laid on her back and let the sun beat down on her as she drifted past the dragon for the countless time.
“Hey, come here,” said Tarok, breaking her out of her daydream. She sat up and paddled over.
“Hold out your hand,” he instructed and she did so, wondering what he was on about.
He lowered his nose to her hand and dropped something in her palm. A small, pinkish pearl rolled in her hand.
“I find them occasionally. That one’s for you,” he said.
“Thank you!” she said delighted.
“Alright, let’s head back. Time to see if Amanda had finished her work,” said Tarok as they met back on the dock to get his gear back on. She sat on the paddle board in the water as the dragon got his rigging untangled.
A sudden noise made them both look up and Tara gasped, “Look!”
A small pod of orcas had come to investigate the cove, chasing in a school of fish. The surfaced with a woosh of air and sea spray, tall finds cutting through the water.
“I’ve never seen a whale before,” she said, astonished.
Tarok watched protectively as the whales swam close by and with Tara still on the water. They seemed to pose no danger, gliding by with a flash of white and black.
“That was wild. I can’t wait to tell the others!’ Grinned the girl once the creatures had departed.
“I love it here,” she beamed, climbing aboard.
“We’re glad you do,” cheered Tarok, jumping into the air to head back for home.

The week went by quickly and uneventful as Saturday was soon upon them, Alyia’s BBQ would be in the evening and all the bits were set, Alyia had gone for a walk along the golden beach near where their home was, James had gone to get the bits from the kitchen for the bbq but the man soon got frustrated not finding the items he was looking for and as usual began to lose his temper.
This feeling would soon pass through their link and inform Alyia that the man was once again unhappy.
Alyia paused on her meander across the beach property in front of the house. There was a familiar feeling coming through the link. It was then she heard the shouting.
"Oh!" she said, trotting back towards the house.
As the dragoness came back, she could hear clattering of plastic on the floor and the ranting and angry expletives coming from the kitchen, soon plastic cutlery began getting chucked out of the window and clattering outside on the wooded balcony.
"Sir!" called the dragoness, grabbing a spatula that had been hurled out into the sand, curses coming from the house.
"Sir! What are you doing?" she repeated, catching a pot before it hit the ground.
“Can’t find anything in this fookin house!” came an angry response as more picnic and plastic Tupperware was flung out of the window in quick succession, the so focused on curing and ranting, he did not even notice Alyia there.
The dragoness ducked out of the way but then peered through the open window hesitantly. "What do you mean you can't find anything? It's all organized. What are you looking for, sir? I'll help you find it."
Soon there was silence and James appeared with the BBQ tongs and his apron with its comical comments about being an angry scot by a bbq, subtly apt for the occasion.
“Ahh there ya beauties be!” he declared but then saw the mess outside and seemed to look at the dragoness with a pang of regret.
“Ahh sorry Lass, I muckin up ya day aren’t I?” he replied back to Alyia.
"No, no," said the dragoness hurriedly, "it's alright. No harm done," she said, collecting the flung items.
James soon came outside and came to pick up the bits that had been flung outside as Alyia looked like she was in a hurry.
“Lass, ya sort tah food girl, I tidy up ere, I made the mess, I tidy, I make ya a hot chocolate as a sorry for being a foul-mouthed bastard” James said picking pu the bits and putting it up on the table neatly.
The dragoness peeked up at the news of hot chocolate, "Oh, sir you are not ... one of those. I get huffy myself when I can't find something in the kitchen," she said, though that couldn't be further from the truth. Alyia had to be the most patient and calm creature in the country.
James had finished picking up all the plastic cutlery and plates for this evening and put them neatly on the table outside, looking to see everything had been picked up.
“There all done, you park your bonnie scales rump ere, I goo make you a hot choccie, be too ticks” James said as he walked back into the kitchen, the man feeling a tad guilty with how he lost his temper a little, it was a rare occasion to see the man act in this kind of way.
The dragoness smiled to herself, not used to being doted on.
"Thank you!" She called after him before looking around and thinking what else there was to be done before the party.
James went back into the kitchen whistling a tune as he made the dragoness a hot chocolate, his way of making up for his temper tantrum earlier, soon he arrived back with the treat for the crème dragoness.
“There ya are Lass, hot choccie with cream and little chewy things and sprinkling of chocolate, foor it too be authentic Scottish, we av to deep fry it” he said putting the mug on the table and sitting at the table with a cup of coffee.
The thought of somehow possibly frying a liquid item made the dragoness pause in confusion for a moment before she realized he was kidding.
"Mmm thank you," she thrummed, taking a sip. "I'm excited about tonight. I hope everyone comes over."
“They better, oor I be avin words with em Lass and you know I can be persuasive” he replied.
Alyia laughed at this, "You're still okay to tend to the barbeque?" she inquired.
James nodded his head lightly.
"Aye, man job cookin the meat, im all prepared, whats on the menu lass? " he asked.
Alyia listed off an absurd number of sides that she had prepared yesterday. She had cooked and prepped the whole day. It was a lot of work feeding dragons and Kendra should be commended for all the effort involved.
"You were in charge of the meat.... you DID get it... right?" she asked, suddenly a little pale.
James gave Alyia a look.
“Are ya questioning my abilty to goo shopping wee dragon?, I av literally cleared the butchers oot of meat and some fish foor our velociraptor” James said.
Alyia let out a sigh of relief, "Oh, good. I think aside from cooking that, all the food preparation is done.... I feel like I'm missing something though..."
James shook his head lightly.
“Its all in hand Lass, joost hope you got enough fire in ya to cook all the meat” James said with a serious look upon his face.
The dragoness looked confused... "Me?"
“Aye you, I been toold I gotta feed ya fatty stuff for ya lung thingamajig, we best get ya prepped” James said getting up and leaving the table, walking into the kitchen.
"Wha..." she said, getting up to follow him. "I can't ...." she began to fret, the night would be ruined without the main course! She looked out the window and spotted the barbecue with a number of propane tanks sitting next to it.
"Oh, sir..." she said, realizing the joke. "You got me worried! “she laughed.
James stuck his head out the window in the kitchen and gave a small and very rare smile to the dragoness, it was so rare in fact that Alyia should have had a camera to film it.
“See?, I can joke and av a laugh Lass, now..get ya arse in ere or I might av dragon as a light supper” he said.
The dragoness laughed and followed him into the kitchen, thrumming happily.
“Well this little get together in the evening will be interesting, lets hope James is in a good mood or he be throwing sharp objects at us” Kris joked lightly to the others in the common room.
"Don't upset him and you'll be safe," said Amanda with a wry smile and she pet Tarok's nose.
Kris chuckled lightly.
“Same goes for you tank,. Be good or he will be serving dragon kebab to us” Kris said with a grin on his face.
"Ew," said Tarok and Korrin snorted.
"I think I'm the only one of the team he hasn't shouted at," said the green dragon.
"Yet," added Amanda.
Kris chuckled lightly as Jon looked up from his work, listening in on the conversation.
“I got our two security operatives will man the fort, I enticed them to stay, paying double time and a half, oh and Dr Hinton is staying as well, he take command while we are all eating meat and deep fried mars bars” Jon said.
"Whaaat!" Exclaimed Tarok.
Amanda was quick to try to subdue this excitement, "Noooo none for you bud. It's chocolate."
"But its deep fried chocolate," said the dragon wistfully, "I have to try it."
Kris laughed lightly.
“Oh no, no chocolate for not after last time, no way” Kris said as he remembered the last time they gave chocolate to Tarok.
“If you feed him chocolate I set Korrin on you” Kris added.
"Oh come on, that's not fair. Chocolate shouldn't exist if I can't have it," huffed the blue dragon.
"I'm evacuated. Don't send me into that battle," said korrin.
"Boys, be nice," chided Amanda but knew that it was all in fun and an ongoing joke for the group.
Kris shook his head as Jon chuckled.
“I do worry for that poor dragoness, I hope James will be ok, I know this is the worst thing for him, perhaps shes told him to behave” Jon suggested.
“Bribery I think” Kris replied as Amanda rolled her eyes as the banter continued in the canteen, even Jon getting involved despite there being work to do before the bbq.
Meanwhile, Tara went to the lab to start her work book, tapping in the code as she entered.
Tara couldn't find her workbook or any of her papers as she scoured the laboratory, "I thought we put them here..." she muttered to herself, confused.
Dr Charles appeared from his office with a smile, “I got your workbook, just marking it, so far so good so I think you deserve a day off, I don’t want you wasting your youth” the man said kindly.
The girl laughed, "if you say so I won't complain."
The doctor chuckled lightly.
“Youngsters like you need to be active, perhaps have a day with Amanda and Tarok, you all set for the evening?” he asked the young lady.
"Yes I am," she smiled happily. "It should be fun."
The man nodded but then remembered something that made the doctor concerned all of a sudden.
"You met James right as in fully" Dr charles asked.
"No. I've only seen him once. Alyia was going to introduce me but he was busy." Replied Tara.
The man was a little worried, knowing the Scotsman’s nature.
"Ahh ok, you haven’t been warned then, the man is a little different, bit brash and uses...colourful language at times" the man explained.
"Oh... well I'm sure I can deal with a little swearing." She assured him.
Dr Charles wasn’t too sure he was the right person to warn Tara, he did not want the young lady to be offended or put off by the man’s brash words or personality.
"Maybe best get Amanda to warn you in advance, I’m no good with these sort of talks" Charles said.
Tara laughed, "don't worry about it. Alyia will watch out for me."
“I’m sure she will, now off you trot, I got some work to do before I venture out” he said as Tara left to go meet up with the dragons and their riders.

Earlier that morning Amanda had woken up and very slowly and very quietly managed to sneak away from her slumbering dragon. She looked over her shoulder, smiling to herself. Tarok was curled in a happy heap upon the cushioned floor, nose tucked under the crook of his wing.
Carrying a large tray, she backed into the room, trying to be careful not to spill any of the contents. She heard the dragon shift, waking behind her as she tried to close the door silently with her food.
“Hey Blue, happy birthday, buddy,” she grinned, turning around with the platter in her hands. A very sleepy face looked back, confused for a second before he brightened, his crest lifted a bit in surprise.
“I almost forgot what day it was when I woke,” he croaked, then clearing his throat, “Is all this for me?”
Amanda nodded and put the tray down carefully, “Yes, your favorite. I’ve got salmon and eggs benedict as well as Kendra’s famous fried shrimp hash plus avocado because green things are good for you,” she grinned.
The dragon shifted his weight, sitting up, the intoxicating smell was delicious.
“Thank you!” he thrummed, nudging her shoulder with his nose. She spread her arms and hugged his muzzle, his head bowed to reach her.
“Happy hatchday, I should have said earlier,” she said with a laugh.
The dragon grinned, “Happy whatever is fine with me.”
“I can’t believe how the years have flown by. When you first came you were hardly bigger than a horse but look at you now,” she said, pride filling her voice.
Tarok looked sheepishly happy at her praise. He had certainly grown, now at his full size for coastals grew into their adult height as weight far earlier than other larger breeds.
“Dig in, Blue. Alex cleared your patrol for today. He’s going to take the shuttle about the island but all looks calm.”
“Oh that was kind of him,” said the dragon, after swallowing a mouthful of amazing food.
As the dragon finished off the last morsels of food from his plate, Amanda produced a box from behind her back. It was wrapped in coloured comics from the local paper, a family tradition of hers.
“What’s this?” he asked.
“It’s for you, open it,” she encouraged, pushing the parcel over to the dragon.
Tarok looked pleased and honoured all at once and began to carefully try to pull apart the wrapping, attempting not to tear it.
“Just rip it, that’s the best part about opening presents,” laughed Amanda.
The dragon did just that, the newspaper tearing with a satisfying crinkle and rip.
He opened the lid of the box and set it down, pulling back the colourful tissue paper inside.
Inside there was a thin leather string loop adorned with what looked like hand carved beads of many different types of wood; glossy with a coating of pleasant smelling beeswax. Each of these had little etchings of starfish, shells, trees and mountains. Between the wood beads were small pieces of turquoise. At the bottom of the strand was a carved spiral that mimicked the bond mark on Amanda’s hand. He looked up at her and she seemed a bit apprehensive.
“Do you like it?” she asked. “I made it myself.”
“I love it!” replied the dragon, his joy at the thoughtful gift was evident in his voice.
She knew that the coastal had been a little jealous of Alyia’s adornments and thought that something like this would suit the beachy dragon.
“I made it out of local trees, the ones we see on patrol all the time. Red and yellow cedar, arbutus, maple, Sitka spruce and the little blue beads are turquoise because I know you like the colour.”
“It is the best thing I could have received,” declared the dragon. “Could you secure it to my tail?”
Amanda took the strand and tied it securely at the base of where the dragon’s tail fans started. It was looped around small enough not to be able to slide over the fans and remain where it was, so long as nothing tore at it.
“There, how’s that?” she asked. He turned his head, lifted his tail slightly to see. “Perfect!” he said proudly, liking the soft wooden sound it made as the beads rattled together.
“You said you carved all those yourself?” he asked, turning back to her.
“I did,” she said, holding up a thumb that had been bandaged for weeks, “My thumb paid for it though. A slip of the carving blade. Dr. Charles had to stitch it.” She said, wincing at the memory.
“You told me you did that washing dishes!” chided Tarok playfully.
“Well, I had to tell a little white lie. I couldn’t ruin the surprise telling you what I had been doing.
“We can go for a fun flight once your food settles. Maybe we can stop by the Iron Orca for lunch later and get an ice cream,” suggested Amanda, much to her dragon’s delight, “Then we can get you all cleaned up for the BBQ. Then again, it is your hatchday, so we can do whatever it is you want to do.”
“No, that sounds fantastic,” he thrummed in reply. Together they spent the morning lounging around talking, taking the day slowly. After the dragon was rigged up they flew along the islands that dotted the Salish sea, stopping off in Campbell River for a light lunch and ice cream. The dragon kept checking on his new tail adornments to ensure they were still there. Amanda’s knots were nothing to be trifled with and the beaded strand stayed securely.
It was a beautiful day, hotter than anything but the sea breeze kept them from utterly melting under the brilliant sun.
After a brief nap on the beach the two of them returned to the facility and Amanda polished Tarok’s scales to a brilliant shine.
“There, buddy. You’ll all cleaned up and ready for your BBQ debut,” smiled the woman, putting the polishing cloth away. “I’m going to go make myself presentable and then we’ll head out. Sound good?”
“Sounds great,” grinned the dragon. All the flying had worked up his appetite and he was excited about the prospect of barbecued food.

Tarok’s birthday day had so far gone to plan, everyone had gotten the coastal dragon a little something and some cards that were proudly on display in the common, put on the table in a decorative fashion as everyone was in good spirits for Alyia’s BBQ evening on Vancouver Island, most of the team were going with a small skeleton crew left to monitor activities.
Kris had retired to his quarters with the green tank of a dragon to polish the deep green scales to make him presentable for the evening.
“Nearly done Korrin, then you be sparkling and looking your very best for you evening meal with Alyia and Mr Happy” Kris said polishing his shoulder and neck scales.
"Are you looking forward to it?" Inquired the dragon, bowing his head so that the man could reach.
Kris smiled lightly, finishing off the polishing of the dragons scales arounds his muzzle and ensuring the dragon looked pristine.
“Of course, I am reserved but I know James will be will be on good behaviour with Alyia hosting and all the work she’s put into it” Kris replied, stepping back to admire his polishing skills.
"I hope so," said Korrin. "Do I look presentable?"
Kris nodded lightly to the dragon’s question.
“Polished Tank, very impressive indeed Korrin, if you were on Kilara you be pulling all those dragonesses” he winked giving a cheeky grin.
Korrin tried to look serious but a wry smile touched the corners of his lips.
Kris laughed lightly.
“Oh I can see that playful side in your Mr, you look great, we best head out, I see if we are taking the shuttle or flying over” Kris said to the green dragon.
Flying. "It's only 10 minutes across the water," insisted the dragon.
“Fair enough, don’t go flying too low or you muck up your impressive looks, so fly gentle to Alyia’s” Kris said as he put his smart clothes in a rucksack.
"Cruising altitude it is," replied korrin. "I'll get us there looking sharp."
Kris smiled lightly.
“Good, I can get changed at theirs into smart clothes, come on let’s go check up on the others, oh out of curiosity how many can you carry now?” Kris asked.
"I'm not sure," said the dragon, looking thoughtful. "I could take a few back if they needed a lift though."
“Don’t worry, the Doctors and Alex will go by shuttle” Kris said as they walked out towards the common which was a little quieter as Kendra and staff were off early today.
As the two of them entered the common, Tarok and Amanda also came into view, also dressed up for the occasion.
"Happy hatch day, tarok. Looking good," said Korrin as he lumbered up to the others. The blue dragon smiled in thanks as Amanda walked around from behind him.
"You too, Amanda. I like your hair down like that," added the green dragon.
Amanda had made an effort to abandon her work outfit to wear a nice blouse and skirt and to free her hair from the normal ponytail it was usually trapped in.
"Thanks, Korrin. You're looked buffed and polished yourself."
Kris gave his greetings to the other two.
“Korrin always looks impressive, scrubs up well, then again so does Tarok, your looking good, you had a good birthday so far?” Kris asked the coastal.
"I have. We went to the Iron Orca for lunch," said the coastal. Korrin looked a bit jealous at this remark but smiled none the less.
"Annnd, Amanda made me this!" he added, showing the ornament on his tail.
"Oh wow, that's nice." said Korrin.
“Very spoilt dragon” Kris said as Dr Charles came in, looking very different without his lab coat and other gear he wore, the man was dressed smartly and wore a different pair of glasses along with Dr Hinton again dressed out of his normal uniform.
“Evening all, there is the birthday dragon, hope you had a good day” Charles said.
"I have! And it's about to get better now that most of the team will be about to celebrate with me," said Tarok, sounding pleased.
Dr Charles smiled lightly.
“Great, it should be good, I think we are waiting for Jon and Alex and then I think we are ready to go, we are going by shuttlecraft” Dr Hinton said.
"I’m here, I'm here," said Alex, hurrying in, trying to button up the cuff of his shirt with a new case of beer tucked under his other arm.
"Shuttle is ready if everyone wants to head over to the hanger."
“We see you there!” Kris said as the team departed to head to Vancouver Island for the birthday BBQ.
Meanwhile over in the beach hut on Vancouver island, Alyia was busy making final preparations for the event, she had been working non stop and James was getting ready, taking a far more relaxed approach, he sorted the meat out the day before and Alyia seemed to be grateful for his small contribution.
As the time ticked away with not long to go, the dragoness was quickly going back and forth to get the final details ready.
"Oh dear, oh dear," fretted Alyia as she rushed about trying to ensure that everything was ready.
"Sir!" she called as she grabbed napkins and tried to put them in a pretty little holder, "Sir, have you gotten ready yet?" she called over her shoulder.
Soon a voice could be heard as James appeared, dressed very smartly in a light teal blue blazer, with dark blue shirt, purple tie and matching light teal blue trousers, the man indeed looked very smart.
“Yeah yeah Imma ready lass, calm ya scales” he said as he looked to brush his hair a bit tidier in the mirror.
Alyia stifled a surprise squeak of happiness as seeing James looking splendid.
"You look great," she said, fussing about to fix his collar.
James frowned and smacked her paw with his hands as Alyia fussed over him.
“Im fine Lass stoop fretting, I sort myself out..now goo do what ya dooin” James replied as he straightened his collar.
Alyia smiled sheepishly but managed to flick away one last piece of lint on his shoulder before turning back to her own tasks, "Now what else do I need to ..." her paw went up to her own head, "Oh no, my bow! Where did I put that thing..." she muttered to herself.
James shook his head lightly.
“Ya getting too round up Lass, ere its by there on the book shelf, nice an safe, joost chill or I goo get a sedative” James said, hading her the sparkling pink bow.
"I know, I know," said Alyia, taking a breath as she tied the bow to her right primary horn, "I just want this all to go right."
James came over and made sure the bow on her was on securely and looked pretty, he also got the replacement necklace and put it round her neck gently, it was as if Alyia was bonded to another person.
The fiery Scotsman tamed for now as he gave the cream dragoness a small number of smooth pets on her muzzle to clam her down, at the same time being quiet, it was as if he was in a sort of Brathille fuelled trance.
Alyia was surprised but pleasantly so.
"Thank you," she thrummed but before she could say anything else, the timer for something in the oven went off and the dragoness dashed for her oven mitts.
“Get tha Whiskey oout Lass, top cupboard, we might be needing it, I know I will!” James said as he strolled outside, awaiting their visitors.

Alyia looked out the window as she plated the last of the appetizers and made sure all the tables and chairs out on the deck were still okay. Tablecloths of white and beachy blue fluttered gently in the slight breeze off the ocean and food of all kinds was presented in lovely fashion across them.
Tilting her head she heard the familiar rumble of the shuttle’s engine. “Oh!” she said, scrambling to get the last of the food on the plate. She swept off her apron in one graceful swoop and hung it on the peg by the pantry.
"Sir, they're here," she said joyfully, looking around quickly to make sure everything was in order.
"Right lass, engage operation party....where’s my drink!" James said realizing he had an empty glass.
"Here, sir," she said, passing him another glass she had at the ready as she went out to meet their guests.
"I get the meat oon Lass, goo mingle and all that rubbish" James said taking a large swig of drink before rubbing his hands together.
"Right...fire er up then" James said as he got things going.
Alyia was already headed out towards the front door, opening and giving a cheerful welcome as she saw the shuttle doors open.
“Welcome!” she beamed as Kris and Korrin landed as well.
Amanda walked down the shuttle ramp beside her dragon into the sun of the summer day.
“What’s in the backpack?” asked Tarok, just noticing now that the woman had her worn grey bag slung over her shoulder.
She smiled wryly at him, “Just some stuff. You know I never go anywhere without it.”
“That is true,” he said, but couldn’t help to think there was something more to it with that smile she gave. He didn’t have time to think about it for Alyia had trotted up and spread her paws. He lowered his head and accepted her hug with a smile.
“Happy Birthday, Tarok,” she smiled in her cheery voice, pulling away, “I hope you like your party.”
“Oh I’m sure I will. I can smell something good cooking already,” grinned the dragon.
Korrin and Alyia tapped horns, greeting each other before the little dragoness herded together the group to walk around the side of the house to the beachfront.
“Oh Alyia everything looks so lovely. You went all out,” said Amanda as they came around the side of the house to see yellow and blue balloons, Tarok’s colours, plus all the tables and chairs circling a stone fire pit.
Alyia looked pleased but humbly so at all the compliments. The ‘backyard’ as it were looked out onto the beach. A large patio ran from the wall to ceiling windows at the back of the house and held the festival sized barbecue. Beyond the patio was a small lawn before the beach sand took over. Patio furniture had been pulled out to the fire pit area to give enough room for humans and dragons to mingle.
Kris came round along with the two doctors to see James who was firing up the BBQ.
"Hi James, your looking smart and you seemed on the ball," Kris said as James waved off his greetings.
"Yeah yeah, fook off...beers in the fridge, help Ya selves but no touchin ma whiskey or I be serving you all up to the dragons," James said as Kris chuckled shaking his head.
"Thanks for the invite" as he went inside as the Dr. Charles rolled his eyes lightly, Mr. happy on fine form it seemed.
Alyia was pointing to the ice coolers and small beer fridge, instructing the others to help themselves to everything offered. She was in full host mode and seemed to be loving it. Her nurturing nature had taken over.
Tara poured Korrin a drink into large pitchers that the dragons used as cups before getting herself one, smiling and happy to be part of this little event.
“Head’s up, Kris!” called Alex as he lobbed a can of beer to the man.
Kris caught it and laughed lightly.
"Cheers boss" Kris replied as he opened the can.
"Ya peasants, ya doont drink proper beer ere, ya all drink coloured water," James said as he put the meat on the hot griddle and it sizzled away.
"Hey, hey now, it's not nearly half as bad as American beer,” Protested the commander lightly, cracking his own open, “ and anyway I brought you whatever.... this is," said Alex, holding up the case in offering, having asked Alyia what the man's preference had been but already forgetting the name of it.
James eyes seemed to light up a little, but tried not to smile.
"Ahh ya brought the goood stuff, Tennants beer an’ cider" James said but Alyia would sense the man’s secret happiness.
Amanda had taken a small plate and looked over the little goodies offered, putting a few on her plate. She spotted some fudge brownies and grabbed one.
“Woah wait there, buster,” she said, pushing Tarok’s paw away from the platter. “No chocolate, remember?”
He pulled a frown, “it’s my hatchday,” he said in mock sadness as she popped the bite sized treat into her mouth.
“Oh, no. You don’t want one of these, they’re awful anyway,” she insisted as she grabbed another.
Tarok gave her a wry smile, he was holding out for one of those mythical deep fried chocolate bars anyway.
For now he took a good sample from the different appetizers and went to mingle with the others.
Good natured banter took over the group as they chatted while the main course cooked, the mouth watering smell wafting across the beach.
It was a brilliant and beautiful day to be outside enjoying a party such as this.
From Amanda’s backpack the woman got her camera and took candid photos of the group for a keepsake of Tarok’s special day.
A game of passing a football broke out on the beach and Amanda snapped away, capturing the laughter and silliness of the group. Alex staggered in the sand, trying to avoid a full beer can as he lunged for the ball.
Alyia suddenly produced a stack of silly party hats and handed them out, smiling as laughter broke out when everyone put them on. Tara chose a bright green one and wore it proudly as Alex took a blue one with a crepe paper tassel on top. Korrin unintentionally made himself into a unicorn as the stretchy band wouldn’t go any further back around his head.
Tarok snorted in laughter at the green dragon. Korrin then lunged at the coastal and put on two of the tall, conical hats on either side of his head.
“There, now you look just as good,” he grinned.
They posed for a photo as Amanda raised her camera.
“Smile, Korrin, you look so serious!”
“I am smiling!” he protested, grinning bigger but now he just looked silly. The two of them broke out into laugher and the camera clicked away, capturing the moment.
Alyia had doled out all the hats save for one last sparkling purple one that said, “Party Animal!” in bright yellow. She walked up to her Attilu who was busily flipping burgers and such on the barbecue. She held up the hat and put her best hopeful expression on.
"Am noot sticking that on ma head Lass, yoou dare an we be avin Alyia kebab" James threatened, pointing his spatula at her.
"Pleeeeease," she said in her most hopeful voice, holding up the hat, undeterred yet by the threat of the spatula.
"No lass...shoo" James said looking at her sternly as he seemed to be holding his ground.
Alyia whistled, pretending to be casual as she leaned forward to put it on for him while his hands were busy with the grill.
James ducked as the dragoness tried to put it on him.
"Lass, what ya dooin, get lost will ya" he said trying to dodge the dragoness putting on the hat.
She was insistent, turning this into a game now and managed to get the sparkly purple hat on his head with a cheerful laugh. "Just while you're playing chef, please, James." she pleaded through her genuinely happy smile. She was flushed with the joy of the party and it would be the cruelest thing to say no now and spoil her glee, and the man knew it.
James shook his head and rolled his eyes as he turned back to cook, leaving the hat on for now.
“Oh I have to get this on camera,” whispered Amanda to Korrin as she lifted the camera and clicked. The dragon stifled a laugh. It was too surreal seeing the man in a sparkly birthday hat and apron standing over the grill.
More laughter followed the pouring of drinks and conversation as the team mingled amiably. Tara shyly showed the group a disappearing coin trick that she had learned at school and smiled almost embarrassed at the applause it garnered.
Amanda snuck over to the patio, knowing that the food was nearly done and that there was precious little time left for what she had planned.
She pushed a fresh glass of whiskey in James’ hand and thanked him for cooking before throwing an arm over his shoulder and grinned as she cheered, “Party selfie with the chef!” as the camera clicked.

James frowned and looked at Amanda unimpressed with having his photo taken with anyone, the man was pretty reserved and was not one to have photos taken.
“Ya crazy Canadian!, why you take a photo of us, I am against the taking of photos” he protested to the woman.
"Aw, come on it's a great photo," she said, showing him the display screen. "The only photo we have of you at the facility is your staff photo. Besides, Aliya will love it."
James shook his head.
“I prefer being in the background young lady, not plastered oover the interwebs, ya lucky it’s the blue raptors birthday, oor ya be threatened with a variety of objects” he warned her.
"Well I consider myself lucky then that it's blues birthday," she laughed.
James looked at her and nodded.
“Lucky you, now goo get ready for food missy, I be serving up soon” James said to the woman as he put the fish on the BBQ for Tarok.
"I will await the meal with my plate eagerly," said the woman.
James shooed the woman away who laughed as she left the man to get on with the BBQ, James muttered to himself about not socialising ever again out of work.
Soon enough Alyia called out to everyone that food was being served up, James was putting the meat and fish out on the table for people to eat, as Alyia put the salad and other bits there as well, the Scotsman seemingly calmer after the initial excitement from the team before.
“Seems food is being served guys, we best take our seats” Kris said to the others on the beach and to the dragons as well who were resting on the golden sands by the steps.
"Alright," said Alex, patting Tarok's side as he got up to get food.
Soon everyone gathered round the table where the food was plated out for everyone, the dragons had more space on the ends of the table as Alex got up to give a speech.
"Id like to make a toast," said Alex, clearing his voice. "Tarok has been an essential member of our little team here on the coast, a great friend and an exceptional dragon. To our speed demon in blue, happy hatch day, tarok!" He said, lifting his drink.
“Here, here” Dr Charles said as the team clapped, as Kris smiled lightly seeing the happy look on everyone’s face including Tarok.
“Tarok, speech, speech!” he teased lightly.
"Um," said the dragon sitting up a little straighter, "uh, thank you all. This has been a wonderful day." He said a little shyly, put on the spot.
James soon broke the awkwardness as he saw the food was getting cold.
“Right, took in now before the winds throws it into the sea, that’s enough of the Oxbridge pleasantries” he said as the team chuckled and tucked into their food.
The team tucked into the food, the meat and fish cooked in such a way that it was soft and tender, everyone was enjoying it as salad and other things were passed along as the party continued to go very well.
People were impressed with the Scots cooking skills on the BBQ.
"This is excellent, thank you chef James!" Said Tarok. Tara and korrin agreed with their own genuine compliments.
"I didn't know you could cook," said Alex.
James looked at Alex with a frown.
“Are you questioning ma cookin skills?, ya wouldn’t wanna doo that lad or there be trouble” James said as Kris shook his head.
“It was just a compliment James” he said as James looked at Kris and nodded, “Aye, fair enough lad” James said eating his food as Kris seemed surprised as he looked over to Alyia, to see if she was having a calming effect on his temper.
Alyia smiled at him and gave a little wink before digging into her own food. She thrummed happily at how well this whole party was going.
Once the food was eaten, people allowed their food to go down as they talked and rested, as Charles and Kris helped clear the tables and plates to help Alyia along the way, Tarok had enjoyed this gathering immensely as he talked with Korrin.
Tarok leaned back and knocked something off the corner of the patio.
"Oops, oh what's this," said the dragon, holding up a rugby ball emblazoned with the blue and white of the Scottish flag."
"Hey, look what I found. James, I didn't know you played!"
Amanda looked a bit apprehensive at her dragons find.
James looked over and saw Tarok was holding up the rugby ball with Scotland emblazoned on the ball, Kris looked and seemed to want to warn Tarok that he was about to get a mouthful from a fiery Scot as the man walked over to the dragon who was holding the ball.
“Oh this is going to end bad” Hinton said to Charles who watched with held breath.
Alex looked a little tense, ready to jump in as alyia looked over, concerned that James was going to erupt and give the dragon a good verbal lashing, even the dragon sensed it.
Tarok pulled back his sail, looking concerned as he held the ball out at arm’s length.
James approached and looked at the ball taking it surprisingly gentle from the coastal dragon who thought he was going to be told off.
“Aye I did blue boy, back in the day, I played Rugbeh union, not that rubbish they play in Yankie land, was given this ball after I scored tah winning try in the cup” James said calmly as everyone seemed surprised at his reaction, the man was calm and collected, very unlike James.
"Oh no way, that's awesome," said korrin, genuinely surprised as the other looked.
Kris smiled, giving a wink to Alyia, the man seemed to be calm, whether it was the drink or just perhaps Brathille Aura making the man calmer and less threatening.
“Who was playing?” Dr Charles asked as James spun the ball and caught it again as he spoke.
“Glasgow and Airdrie, we won, 90th minute” James said as Charles smiled lightly.
Kris overheard the conversation and spoke, after James described the win and the party afterwards.
“I always wanted to play rugby, ended up playing Ice hockey instead in my college days, it’s a very nice rugby ball” Kris said joining in the conversation.
"You proved you're a good cook, you should show us some of these champion rugby skills," suggested korrin and Alex nodded in eager agreement.
"Come on, let's see."
James looked around and nodded.
“Alright touch beach rugby then” James said holding the ball as Kris grinned to Korrin as Dr Charles chuckled.
“I might not be young but I can give it a go, plus with touch everyone can play” suggested the doctor.
There was a general cheer of enthusiasm as the team got up to play.
Tara lingered back beside Alyia, "I don't know how to play... I've never been any good at sports." she whispered to the dragon.
"Me either. We can cheer them on though," beamed the dragon; excited at the opportunity to watch her Attilu play a game.
The teams were decided, Tarok, Amanda, Charles and Alex on one team, Korrin James, Kris and Dr Hinton on the other.
The game was explained and the rules set out, Charles helping Kris, Alex, Amanda and the others to explain how to do the game and with James explained it, soon everyone got the hang of it and it was game on.
James was lined up to kick off when he spoke to Kris, seeing the green dragon on all fours on the sand.
“Hang on lads and Lasses, how the heck is koorin gonna play, he’s on all foors!” James said as Kris chuckled.
“He’s the tank, he can cope” Kris said to James.
"I'll figure it out," said the dragon confidently with a swish of his tail. Korrin could rear up to grab the ball but running with only three legs would likely slow him down even more.
“Alright lets kick off then” Charles said as James kicked off beginning the game as the ball was caught by Charles who knew how to play.
Alyia was smiling, eyes bright as she watched the game begin.
"You seem extra happy today, Alyia," commented Tara, unable not to mirror the dragon's smile with her own.
"Oh, it's been a wonderful day and so nice to see James having fun." she replied.
Amanda had kicked off her fancy shoes to run barefoot in the sand and passed the ball to Tarok.
He snatched it out of the air and darted forward. Korrin barrelled towards him, his usual determined look across his face.
The coastal passed the blue ball over to Charles in one quick motion.
Charles went forward and despite being a little older than the others he got past his fellow doctor with some quick foot work and scored a try as he panted lightly as Tarok’s team celebrated.
Tarok gave a shrill whistle of celebration as his team scored a try.
"Yeah!" grinned Amanda.
The game soon restarted and Charles kicked back to James team as James passed the ball, avoiding Amanda as he passed the ball to the green dragon.
Korrin took the ball in his left paw and tucked it safely against the crook of his arm so that he could charge forward, though clumsily on his remaining free legs.
Tarok ran at him, quick and agile in the sand. His sails were up, flashing brilliant yellow as he set to making it as difficult as possible for Korrin to pass the ball.
“Just go forward Korrin!” Kris said, seeing the coastal dragon blocking his passing as the others were in a defensive line.
Korrin glowered at the coastal, saber teeth flashing as he made to barrel forward.
He was blocked by Tarok who grinned and growled, "Tag!" at the green male, setting his powerful hind legs into the sand, showing he would not yield.
The game continued as Tarok got involved, Korrin was getting better at running on three legs and was fearsome to see him charge forward as he passed the ball to Kris who dodged Alex and made a beeline for the try line.
Tarok lunged in front of Kris to block his way. In full predatory mode the coastal was hunkered down low in the front while his rigid tail kept his balance for lightning quick movement.
Kris thought he be stuck but decided to go for a more comical get through, diving as Tarok missed him and the man slid under the dragons legs and scored the try to bring the game even as the whole team laughed at Kris ingenious way to get past Tarok.
Tarok's yellow eyes went wide in surprise as the other laughed lightly.
Korrin grinned back at the coastal, playfully smug, "Try," he said and Tarok gave him a snort in reply.
The game had its funny moments but there was some good rugby being played and the dragons were well involved.
Tarok was immersed into the game now as he seemed to take charge and shout directions for his teammates.
Charles listened and watched, impressed how Tarok began being a captain, learning to put people in defence to stop James and co getting ahead. It was something worth noting to Alex after the game.
James despite his somewhat unhealthy lifestyle, was on form and showed why he was such a good player, scoring two tries for team Korrin, however Amanda the only girl on the team scored a wonderful try thanks to a excellent pass by Tarok
Tarok cheered as Amanda scored. She jumped, throwing her hands in the air as her dragon let out a burst of flame high above them.
The game was now tied at 30 -30, with the light dimming, this would be the last moves of the game before they had to call it in and both dragons wanted to win.
Soon Korrins team were on the attack, James used some fancy footwork as he dodged Amanda and Alex and went forward, Charles making the Scotsman pass to Korrin to continue their attack.
Korrin caught the ball and ran for the line drawn on the beach. Tarok came to a skidding stop, sails flared as he stood as the last line of defence. He stomped a great taloned paw, sending sand flying as he flared his wings, a determined smirk on his face.
Korrin snorted and made to step forward but Tarok wasn't going anywhere, blocking the line.
"Not today, Fish breath," rumbled Korrin through a showy display of barred teeth but Tarok grinned, lurching forward and blocking him further with a growl.
Korrin made to try again but the coastal stood firm, unrelenting, claws embedded in the sand as he held the tank up right on the line, to have the game stop to reset as he was held up.
Before the dragons could do anything else there was a sharp whistle.
"Time! I'm calling it here. Tie game all around," said Alex, looking a little winded.
"Tired already, boss?" teased Amanda.
"Never," he huffed, making a show of putting his hands on his knees, doubled over to catch his breath.
The whole team seemed tired but it had been great fun to watch and play as Charles patted Tarok on the side.
“That was an amazing hold there Tarok, well done son, very well played” Charles said with a smile.
“Aye we make a rugger player of ya yet bluey” James said.
Tarok smiled, pleased at the praise. Amanda kissed him on the nose and gave his muzzle a pet, "Well done, mister!"
"You played well too," Tarok smiled.
“That was indeed a game and a half, very fun too” Dr Hinton said as they walked back to where Alyia and Tara were as the girls would go get everyone water and squash to drink.
“Well played Korrin, you did superbly, on three legs you did very well” Kris complimented the green dragon.
Korrin chuckled at that, "For once I have to give it to Tarok, being bipedal has its uses."
Kris patted the green dragon on the side.
“He was up for it today, I have never seen that intensity and determined look since he took on Jack 2 years back, I saw the same look” Kris commented on the coastal determination.
"He's a reserved one, but he has fire in him," said Korrin before he smiled, "Can we talk about that lame pass earlier? WHO were you trying to pass too? Lucky you I'm fast and caught it," he teased Kris.
The man laughed lightly.
“Well I must admit it was poor, I think James called it a hospital pass, if it was full on tackling, id been taken out and winded on the floor” he said chuckling back, both walking to the house.
As the team rested, Dr Charles approached Alex with a glass of squash and sat next to the man who was resting up.
“I must admit Alex, despite it being a game Tarok showed leadership and confidence out there, thought it was worth mentioning” Dr Charles said to Alex as the others mingled and sat down the other side.
"I noticed. He's been really stepping up lately, in all aspects. I'm glad we have him around," said the commander, wiping his forehead with the back of his hand.
James had drunk a glass of water and now had a squash as he took his rugby ball and put it away so it was safe, after using a towel to wipe the sand grains off it.
"You did really well out there, sir!" said Alyia, happily, taking advantage of the rare mood, "I wish I could have seen you in your championship game." There was the nearly ever present echo of a thrum in her voice as she spoke.
James looked at Alyia and nodded, giving her crème dragoness a pet on the muzzle gently.
“I was, a bit different in ma youth Lass, yooou be even moore embarrassed of me, buut still have it” he replied.
"More embarrassed?" said the dragoness, leaning her muzzle into the pets, "Nonsense, I'm not now and I wouldn't have been then. You were fantastic."
James continued smooth the dragoness crème scales gently and then gave her a scratch in a sweet spot, this was all very rare for James to do, he was almost acting like a normal Atillu.
“Well Lass, Im glad ya think soo, we serve up cold drinks an see aboot tidying up” James said, still petting the dragoness.
Alyia nodded, and closed her eyes, happy as she could be. There seemed to be a slight glimmer and sparkle across the bridge of her nose, faint but there
James continued but finally after a few minutes James gestured for them to re join the group, Alyia very happy for this rare and lovely moment between them, noone else saw it but Alyia would know despite the man’s attitude and brash behaviour most of the time, Brathille had a way of making even the angriest man in Scotland to be calm and show affection to his dragoness.

The rest of the evening was a hit. Korrin aided in the making of a bonfire that the group surrounded with drinks and chatter as the sun went down in a brilliant show of colour. The fire crackled and snapped as they piled on driftwood. Alex told enthusiastic stories about his early years, training and becoming a head of his own Torchwood division.
Tarok insisted to hear a few funny stories from Amanda from when she was a wildlife officer that had everyone in stitches.
Now that the stars began to poke out through the twilight the team began to get to their feet and get ready to set off for home. A chattering of thank yous to their hosts followed as Alyia trotted them out to the shuttle.
The little dragoness was nearly glowing with delight as the success of her first ever party.
“Thank you, again little sis, it was a wonderful party,” said Tarok, bending down to touch her forehead with his snout.
She beamed up at him, “Happy Hatchday, it was lovely to have you here. I’m very glad you enjoyed it.”
Amanda patted the dragoness affectionately before boarding the shuttle with the others, full and content from the evening festivities.
“See you on Monday, everyone!” cheered Alyia, waving as the shuttle took off into the air. She sighed happily as she stood next to James as they watched the craft fly away.
“That was a perfect afternoon, I think,” she smiled. “Couldn’t have gone any better.”
"Aye, ya had yoor visit, soo no more parties for a year," he replied.
"A year!" Laughed the dragoness, turning to him, "is that the limit, one annual party?" She knew that asking for any more would be pushing the line but was happy regardless.
"Yes, I don’t dooo peopling Lass, yoou know that" James replied back.
She wanted to say that he did nothing but deal with people on a daily basis, being in the media but she knew better than to spoil the moment with that kind of banter. It wasn’t really her style anyway.
"I know, I know," she said smiling, "but this was very nice. Thank you."
"Nay bother...now time for a night cap, ya joining me lass, noooo gonna hide now," James said heading back into the house.
Alyia trotted after him, a bounce in her step, humming under her breath. Today had been grand.
The next week saw the team dive back into the normal tasks of daily life. Tarok and Korrin conducted patrols up and down the coastline. One eventful day saw to their participation in a rescue for a capsized fishing boat but other than that event the days had been fairly calm, allowing the dragons and their riders to conduct drills and practice their aerial skills.
Tara dug into her studies once more and was often found in the small labs, taking notes and reading from extensive studies. She looked forward to being able to put her hard work to practical use one day. Being a specialized dragon doctor, for veterinarian didn’t quite the word to use, would be amazing and she’d be one of the few people in the world to have such a job.
“Are you still enjoying your studies?” asked Icarus, his deep purple eyes flashing through the video call screen later that afternoon when she had taken a break to call home to see how things were going.
“I am,” smiled the girl, “I am doing a lot of biology work and I am taking a few online courses so that I don’t turn the Doctors into full time teachers. They have their own work to do as well. It’s been tough, especially organic compounds and that kind of stuff, but they always have answers if I have questions. It’s a new field so they are learning as they go too, about dragons I mean.”
“Of course, that all sounds very interesting, Tara. I am glad you’re enjoying it. When will you come back to visit again?”
Tara smiled at this. Her mom often asked the same thing but the dragon too wished to see his family as well and asked after her often.
“I don’t come back for my next break until the 15th of next month,” she said.
“Oh, that is quite a while,” replied the dragon.
“Don’t worry, it will come sooner than you realize,” she reassured him, “Hows Michelle and Mom?”
“They have been well. Michelle is away from the house more and more so your mother and I have been tending the farm. She’s enlisted some help and hired a neighbor to run some of the machines for harvest later this year.”
“Justin Halwark?” asked Tara and the dragon nodded.
The girl looked at her watch and back up at the screen, “Break’s over. I have to get back. It was nice talking with you, Icky, I’ll call again when mom is home, okay?”
“Alright, be safe, Tara,” said Icarus.
“I will, see ya!” she smiled, ending the call.
She let out a sigh as she turned around and looked at a large textbook that waited for her on her desk.
“Alright, time to tackle you,” she said, opening the book.
In the lounge Amanda had just returned with Tarok from a lengthy patrol. She grabbed a sandwich from the kitchen and sat cross legged on the floor, leaning against Tarok as they took their break in the common area.
Her dragon’s breathing was steady, not winded from their circuits. The dragon’s stamina for long, steady flights had grown with him over the past little while. His light frame made catching ocean breezes and updrafts along the coast a breeze and lent extra efficiency to his flight.
“Good job out there today, Blue,” said Amanda, tucking her riding gloves into a pocket before balancing her plate on her knees to eat.
“I flew, not really hard work,” replied the dragon humbly.
“You’re doing more than flying, Blue, you’re helping keep our community safe. It’s good,” she insisted.
Tarok smiled at this, “Yeah, I suppose you’re right.

Jon came out from the command centre with a small smile on his face and approached Amanda, Tarok and Kris who was snoozing on the other sofa with Korrin reading on his tablet the news.
“We have incoming dragon riders, approaching fast, your needed in the hanger I think” Jon said to team dragon.
Tarok and korrin jumped to action with their human counterparts.
"What is it?" Asked korrin as they hurried to the hangar.
“we will see” Kris said as the team rushed into the hanger as the doors opened up, then coming in quick as a flash was a green object approaching them at speed.
Korrin frowned, staring at the strange thing in the sky, tensed and ready for action should it be needed. He could sense Tarok readying himself to his left.
Jon soon arrived seeing the dragons tense and their riders puzzled, he chuckled shaking his head at their reactions.
“Do you seriously think I’m a poor security head?, I wouldn’t open the door to just anyone, surely you know who is coming into land?” Jon said as Kris looked at him puzzled, not understanding.
"Uh, no?" Said Korrin, now confused.
Soon the object appeared in better view and soon it became apparent who it was as wings appeared to slow them down and came into land.
Kris looked up now that this strange object was allot clearer in view.
"Oh, it's Hadassa!" Said Amanda, suddenly realizing.
The dragons looked surprised as they realized who it was.
"He has Lucas with him," noticed korrin.
Lucas appeared and smiled waving as Hadassah landed, giving a respectful nod and allowing Lucas off, the boy had grown from the youngster they met a few years ago, the dragon had also grown, his antler horns were bigger and he seemed more muscular with allot more fluff around him, but the dragon seemed to have a more grown up appearance now.
Korrin stepped forward, realizing how the other dragon had grown in the time since the team had last encountered them.
"Welcome, Hadassa, Lucas. It is good to see you again."
“Hello Korrin, Tarok its great to see you, I hope you have all been well, we thought of popping over, hope it was ok?” Lucas said as Hadassah remained quiet for now.
"Of course. Lucas you've grown so tall! I feel like it's been ages. How have you been?" Asked Tarok.
Lucas smiled as the team spoke to the young man.
“We are doing well, I’m having fun in school, I’m only 2 years away from finishing grade school, living with my grandparents, Hadassah is with us too!” he said excitedly as the dragon shook his head, amused.
"Oh that is great. How is it all working out," asked Amanda, directing the question to the dragon.
Hadassah looked at Amanda and replied.
“The food isn’t too bad, Saves me hunting” the dragon said, his voice sounded deeper and it appears the dragon had a sense of humour.
Korrin smiled slightly at that, "more free time, then. You should have visited sooner. We just had a party for Blue, we would have loved to have had you there."
“This is why we are here, Lucas, you have something for Tarok, have you not” the dragon said.
“Oh yeah!” Lucas said excitedly as he got his rucksack off his back and got out a gift wrapped in Orca themed paper.
“Sorry its late, happy birthday!” he said as Kris smiled.
“That is very kind Lucas and thank you Hadassah for bringing Lucas” the man said.
Tarok looked surprised and gently took the gift.
"How thoughtful, you really didn't have to..." he said and he carefully pulled back the paper.
Once the dragon had unwrapped the present, he see it was a hand crafted Celtic cross Symbol with Tarok’s name in the middle with blue and yellow colours painted on it to match the dragon’s scales, Lucas seemed exited as Tarok saw it.
“I really hope you like it, I made it myself for you” Lucas said as Kris and Jon peered to look.
"You made this?" Said Tarok, astonished, "its lovely! Thank you!"
"I can attach it to your harness if you like, Blue. It would look nice on the chest strap." Suggested Amanda.
Lucas seemed pleased as gave a high five to his dragon who smiled lightly.
Alex soon appeared, "sorry I'm late! Welcome, Lucas, Hadassa, I hope the flight over was okay." He greeted them warmly.
Lucas greeted Alex happily, the humans talked as it gave more chance for the dragons to talk with Hadassah.
"How have you been lately, Hadassa?" Asked Tarok, trying to get the other dragon to speak more.
Hadassah turned to speak to Tarok.
“Im ok, grown a bit as you can see, still fast” he winked at Tarok, his tone was allot more friendly.
The blue dragon grinned, "I wouldn't doubt it. It's good having you around. Are you both staying long?"
“Lucas would love to stay overnight, he wanted me to fly fast, which I obliged of course but a rest be nice overnight” Hadassah asked.
"Then it's settled. We can let Kendra know that you'll be joining us. We can give you a tour if you like," suggested Korrin.
Hadassah nodded lightly.
“Lucas and I would appreciate it, been a little while since I came here, I umm must offer my apologies for my behaviour, Lucas basically said I acted like an Ass” the green dragon said.
Korrin shrugged, "it's in the past. Don't worry about it."
Hadassah smiled lightly, glad everything was ok with them all.
“I owe you an ass kicking though” Hadassah said with a serious look but a teasing smile crept onto his face.
"Is that so?" Smirked Korrin with a flick of his tail.
Hadassah nodded lightly.
“Ive grown now so Im up for a rematch, but in the distant future” he said as the humans gestured to everyone to come inside to the common area.
"Deal," said korrin as Tarok gave him a look out of the corner of his eye. Korrin lifted his chin and carried on, leading the dragons towards the others.
Meanwhile on Vancouver island, James and Alyia were resting up in their home, Alyia was busy making food while James was watching the football on the TV, shouting at the referee’s decision and threatening to rearrange the referees teeth as Alyia ignored the threats coming from the living room.
Alyia was singing a little tune under her breath as she puttered around the kitchen, popping food into the oven.
"Sir, do you... oh," she said looking up to see the man had fallen asleep on the living room couch.
James was sleeping on the sofa, the remote in his hand still as the tv was on with the Scottish football on, the man had returned to his usual shouting self.
Alyia smiled to herself. He had been shouting at the tv screen just moments before. She decided she'd let him rest and he would wake when he was ready for food. She tip toed over quietly and turned down the tv a bit so the noise wouldn't wake him.
The man continued to sleep soundly, the dragoness making sure he was comfortable as she returned to the kitchen to continue making their evening meal.
Alyia plated the meal with care, a traditional Sunday roast with the usual fixings, though perhaps a little more generous towards the ratio of vegetables.
She smiled to herself, pleased. It smelled delicious.
She put down the plate on the coffee table in front of the man and gently nudged his arm, "sir?" She called to him.
James stirred and opened his eyes, seeing the dragoness, he was about to ask why she woke him up but then smelt the food and saw she had made it all and was all laid up on the table.
“Best way too wake up a sleeping Scotsman..with food, good thinkin Lass” James said getting up from the sofa and sitting at the table.
"Enjoy," she said, setting about getting her own meal.
James tucked into the food as Alyia ate hers, he noticed more vegetables on his plate.
“Ya tryin too tell me something lass?” he asked pointing to the large portion of veggies on his plate.
"Me? No sir," she said casually as she took a bite of her own food.
James frowned slightly, not fully believing the crème dragoness.
“Hrmm, I’m watchin ya Lass, ya cannae force me to get healthy” he said as he continued eating his food, glancing over at the TV to see the football.

The success of the party left Alyia in high spirits that would last the rest of the moth if all went well. She was a please little creature with a unrelenting gentle smile that touched the corners of her mouth.
Her good mood seemed to have a settling effect on those around her, especially her Attilu and for a while, things coasted along smoothly with minimal hiccups.
Luca and Hadassa’s visit was once again too short but it had been good to see the pair in good spirit and good health. Hadassa’s need for seclusion overrode any desire to stay longer.
Still, their short visit was appreciated, and the team did their best to make the feel at home. Soon enough the facility had to say goodbye to their guests and resume the daily goings on.
The week that followed was calm and uneventful apart from a Coast Safety in partnership with SAR workshop that the dragons had been invited to help participate in. Tarok and Korrin drew in big crowds, making this important event more known to the local communities.
It also gave the dragons some good press and allowed people to see the good that they were doing for their province. Everything had been green lit by James as it proved to be good for the dragon’s approval ratings. Working alongside SAR was a boon for the team, showcasing their firebreathing members as a helpful and practical part of society.
The dragons participated in some of the safety demonstrations and Korrin even spoke about what to do if a dragon was dispatched to an individual for rescue. He spoke with a clear, precise tone but seemed surprised when a number of questions were thrown his way. His blue counterpart seemed to pick up this slack with ease, however.
Tarok was the more outgoing of the two in these situations. He could leave his shyness behind when faced with the awe of those so inspired by the presence of dragons.
He loved chatting with the people that came to such events and did his best to appear non-threatening when approached by those who seemed a little intimidated by his raptor-like presence and Korrin’s fierce persona.
Once the safety event was over, the riders packed up their gear and took off with their dragons into a hazy blue sky.
“Korrin you did really well today. I was super impressed with your safety section,” said Amanda as Tarok flew up to the green dragon and matched his speed with slow wing beats, “I could tell that people were really listening. Maybe that’s just because rescue procedures coming out of the jaws of a dragon is a little more surreal than the usual.”
Korrin smiled a little at this, proud, “Thank you.”
"Yes I was very impressed tank, very confidently spoken, very Forge like, commanded allot of respect" Kris said with a light pat on the shoulder. A faint rumble of approval reverberated through his dragon at this.
“Though you did make that one little girl cry…” teased Tarok.
“She asked to hear me roar, how was I supposed to know that her request would lead to tears?” huffed the green dragon, affronted and a little embarrassed.
Amanda laughed, “Easy big guy, kids can be like that. Don’t worry about for a second. My mom still teases me to this day that I used to cry when I asked for a blue bowl for my cereal but would cry if it wasn’t the ‘right’ blue bowl.” She said, rolling her eyes at her childhood self.
Kris merely shook his head lightly and laughing, there would always be time for payback later.
Amanda stretched in the saddle. Flying back from Victory was a bit of a longer flight but a beautiful one in the least. She could tell Tarok was getting bored of the slow pace though, not wanting to leave Korrin in their dust.
She tucked herself low in the saddle and leaned to the right and her dragon instinctively rolled to the right.
“Up and over, Blue!” she called to him.
The dragon beat his wings, sending them upward. In one fluid motion he soared over Korrin and rolled as he reached the peak of the arc before diving down the opposite side, so close that the wind of their movement made Kris’s uniform flutter.
"Oh you show offs, you know he is the tank, come land on the ground and we give you a demo" Kris teased back.
Tarok soared up again like a rocket. He loved the buzz the slower dragon, a traditional game of chicken and chase that his breed loved to play.
Korrin made a half attempt at snapping at the blue dragon as he made another pass but the alarm of the communicator sounding off stopped him.
Tarok came back around and flipped right side up and as Amanda reached for the button on her device.
“Gillis here,” she said into the speaker as she brushed back a few wild loose strands of hair that had been swept up in the flight, “What’s up?”
“It’s Alex. There’s been an attack on our mainland office. Where are you?” came the voice, rushed but firm.
The dragons tensed at this, yellow eyes wide in alarm, “We’re ten minutes out from the base.” Replied Amanda.
“Hustle in. There have been two fatalities. I need you back to base. We have the shuttle on standby.”
“Come on!” said Korrin, surging forward.
Tarok didn’t need to be told twice, he beat his wings as they raced for home.

The hanger was buzzing with activity as a large shuttle craft, hired for carrying the dragons was being prepped quickly for a quick turnaround, Jon was there, helping the shuttle pilot along with Kris who was bringing security items and medical kit for Dr Charles.
“I want us going in 5 minutes, the dragons will be here soon” ordered Jon as as the team got the shuttle ready for immediate launch.
Tarok was the first to dash through the open doors of the sky dome, followed by Korrin as a young member of the security officers ran past to get ready the shuttle.
"What's going on?" asked Amanda as she vaulted off Tarok's saddle.
"Not quite sure yet. Two confirmed fatalities though." said Alex grimly.
Jon grabbed his tablet and brought up the report from the offices and from the RMCP who were responding.
“Says our offices were attacked, two people killed in an apparent targeted attack, police have sealed off the area and Brogan is on the scene as well, medical teams are there but when you guys we have jurisdiction over the investigation” Jon said.
"Got it, we're all going?" asked Amanda.
Alex already had time to think on the matter.
"Yes, you, kris and the dragon, board the shuttle and lets head out."
Kris nodded, “Come on lets go shuttle is ready” he said as Dr Charles entered the shuttle along with some bags to do his investigations.
“I keep things ticking here and keep you up to date Alex” Jon said to the commander as the engines began to power up, with everything ready for a quick launch to head to the Vancouver offices.
"Great, thanks," said Alex quickly, in disaster response mode. "You have our direct line of communication. We'll let you know if we find anything." the man said before he hurried after the dragons, up the shuttle ramp.
Jon nodded as he returned to the command centre to keep Alex up to date as Kris followed Alex as the shuttle was ready for launch.
Once the shuttle ramp doors shut, the shuttle took off and set a course towards the Vancouver offices at speed.
“We be there in 10 minutes at this speed, I land us on the base helipad” the shuttle pilot said as he flew on the quickest route towards the city.
Amanda buckled into her seat as the dragons settled in the wide space behind them.
"What do you think or rather, who do you think-" started Tarok but Korrin shook his head.
"No way of knowing just yet."
The shuttle continued to fly towards the city, Kris and Dr Charles were up in the cockpit along with Alex who sat next to the pilot, with it being a clear, sunny day, they were able to make good time to arrive at the offices.
"When we arrive Kris, I want you to ensure the security of the perimeter. I know Brogan will already have the place sealed off but just to be sure. Doctor, we'll need to see if anything was left on scene that will give us any insight to who was responsible. So far no one had claimed responsibility yet so that will be on us."
Kris nodded lightly at Alex orders, “Yes sir, me and Korrin will patrol the area and get it secure” the man said assertively.
“Yes Sir I can do that, I brought Dr Hinton’s forensics kit to gather evidence” he said to the commander.
"Good, Amanda, you and Tarok will be on standby in case anything comes up. Korrin, keep out of sight as much as possible, James has suggested to keep you guys out of the lime light if possible until we sort this out," said Alex.
The shuttle continued at speed towards Vancouver and meet up with Brogan and his officers.
“Alex sir, we are approaching the offices, I will be engaging landing procedures shortly” the pilot said as the offices and buildings came into view.
The shuttle slowed down as it entered Vancouver airspace, the shuttle flew towards the torchwood 7 offices on top of a skyscraper near the bay.
Alex nodded, "Everyone ensure your communication devices are working." he instructed.
Amanda tested hers and made her it was snug as she waited to land.
“Once we landed we disembark” Kris said to Korrin who nodded as Dr Charles powered up his tablet as the pilot activated the landing gear to land safely onto the helipad on top of the tall building.
All of a sudden a shot smashed a small hole in the front window and the pilot was hit directly in head as the bullet caused sparks to come from one of the control panel as blood was splattered on the far side of the cockpit as alarms in the shuttle beep.
“****!” Kris said in alarm as Dr Charles looked shocked at what happened as the shuttle alarms blared in their ears.
Alex swore as Amanda screamed in alarm as their pilot slumped over. The shuttle seemed to lurch to the side and Alex rushed to get out of his seat, ripping at his seatbelt as he crouched over the controls.
"What happened?" yelled Korrin, unable to see what was going on.
"Martin, was shot. He's gone," came Amanda's shaking voice, as Alex got the shuttle under control. He was already shouting information across the communicators as he angled them towards safety.
The shuttle moved erratically and was on the verge of crashing, the shot had hit them at the most venerable time as the main computer alarm sound.
"Warning proximity Alert!" the computer said as the shuttle moved erratically as Alex tried to get it under control as everyone hung on for dear life.
"Hang on!" Said Alex through gritted teeth as the dragons tried to stop themselves from being thrown about in the back of the shuttle.
Finally the shuttle was under control in the nick of time, they were on the verge of crashing into the Torchwood offices, the team was shaken as Alex brought the shuttle under control.
“We need to get the person who did this sir, open the ramp and me and Korrin will give chase!” Kris said as Charles only got his breath back as Alex landed the shuttle, the team obviously shaken by the turn of events that happened.
"No," said Alex firmly, "it's too risky. We aren't prepared for this kind of fight."
"But they're getting away!" Protested korrin.
"No," Alex, repeated, "I am not risking losing anyone else. We didn't bring anyone's armour, you'd be likely going out just asking to get shot."
Kris was going to protest, feeling the dragons anger and frustration when Charles spoke.
“Let’s just deal with what we got Kris, we lost an additional person, lets deal with that” Charles said as Havocs soon flew overheard flashing their lights after seeing the shuttle move erratically as Brogan appeared with a team towards the shuttlecraft, the man had looked worried seeing the shuttle lose control.
The dragons disembarked the shuttle first, stepping down the ramp cautiously while ensuring their team members were protected.
Alex broke away from the pack and started towards Brogan.
Brogan nodded looking concerned as the team looked shaken and all over the place, then he noticed someone slouched in the pilots chair.
“Are you guys ok, we heard a gun shot and wondered what happened, when we saw the shuttle spin out of control my fears were raised” Brogan asked Alex as medics rushed in but Dr Charles was shaking his head as he spoke to them.
"No, our pilot was taken out. Bullet right through the windshield," said Alex. "I want to know where it came from and who did it." His voice was hot with anger despite him trying to maintain calm.
Brogan nodded, gesturing to Alex and the others to head inside for their safety and to keep them hidden just in case the sniper was around still, but with the police activity, the attacker could be long gone by now.
“Our teams are searching the area and high rise buildings, we were in the process of informing next of kin for the 3 people who died, I can take you and your team there, I asked for your staff to be sent home for their safety and they made statements” the Lieutenant explained to Alex as armed guards protected the dragons and riders.
Alex nodded grimly, taking in the news, "yes, let's see the scene and try to piece together what happened here."
Kris approached and spoke to Alex, Korrin was still irritable and was not impressed being protected by others instead of him protecting the team, Kris sensed this and went to put their skills to use.
"Sir, permission to go with Korrin and support the police in keeping the perimeter secure, Korrin is itching to do something useful" Kris said to Alex.
"Not yet. Not until we have a better understanding of what is going on here," said Alex firmly.
Kris frowned but did not say anything as he gestured to Korrin to follow them inside.
“We secured the area and I made sure the other agencies are kept away but the Provincial government are after some answers as well as my bosses” Brogan spoke to Alex as everyone walked inside.
"Of course. Everyone is hungry for answers," replied. Alex as they followed, " tell me what we're looking at here."
Brogan nodded as he explained the situation as the team walked into the corridors of the building, Vancouver police around the area, giving additional protection for the Torchwood 7 team.
The dragons seemed on edge, wanting to protect their bonded humans fiercely.
"Keep close, okay?" Said Tarok. Amanda looked up at him, knowing her dragon was tense.
"I'm not going anywhere without you," she assured him.
Korrin was of a like mind, looming over Kris like a green shadow.
Brogan explained the situation and how everything unfolded, as they approached the crime scene, the bodies of two staff members were already y in body bags and the are cordoned off with police tape, the scene looked horrific and Kreis seemed a little taken aback at what they saw but returned to a firm expression as Brogan explained the security arrangements.
Amanda looked like she was trying to be stoic but Alex knew his team well. He nodded to her and gestured that she could stand back with her dragon.
"The initial emergency call reported two deaths. Who was the third?" He asked.
Brogan looked at the tablet and shook his head lightly.
“One of ours, first person on call officer Jefferies, new to the role, first answered the call, shot dead in his patrol car, whoever has done this has a powerful sniper weapon, plus the death of your pilot means the death total is up to four” Brogan said.
“We do not want to cause a panic in the city, we need to keep this under wraps or panic could spread about a killer on the loose” Kris added his two cents.
"One of the reasons I wanted the dragons to hang tight. Media points their lenses wherever the dragons are." Said Alex as Amanda nodded.
"I want our best working full tilt to take down whoever is behind this," the commander said to Brogan, "Dr Drake will take the lead on forensics though we would take any assistance you might be able to lend. I want any surveillance footage in the area. I'm betting on someone catching something of use."
Brogan nodded lighted at the request.
“We give you what you need and all, we keep the area secure, though I might suggest you take the dragons back to T7 HQ, we can give you an escort home with the havocs if you want” Brogan said as Dr Charles came in with the equipment on a trolley.
“I think I need Dr Hinton here with me as well, to do the work” Charles said.
“We can offer your guys protection till your work is carried out” Brogan added.
Alex thought a moment. "I'm going to have the dragons stay here for now. To ensure nothing else goes sideways. I'll take the shuttle back for dr Hinton and whatever supplies you might need." He said, making a mental list of things that needed to be done.
Dr Charles nodded.
“Ok sir I get set up” the doctor said as Kris assured Alex they would be ok and safe here with Brogan’s officers around as the investigation would be carried out, it would be a long investigation and the two men would be working through the night.
Meanwhile Jon had been informed by Alex what had gone on and the loss of their junior pilot in the shuttlecraft, Alex was on his way back with Jon letting Dr Hinton know to be ready to Aid Dr Drake in his investigation work.
Dr Hinton was getting his equipment ready to load up onto the shuttle and to get himself ready.
Tara came down the hall and into the labs where dr Hinton was gathering items. She had her own bag slung over her shoulder.
"I'm ready to go," she said, intent on helping and not wanting to give the man a chance to refuse her going.
Dr Hinton looked up to see Tara there with her rucksack across her back, the man knew this was no place for a young lady like Tara.
He shook his head lightly.
“Im sorry Tara, I know you want to help but I cant let you come with me, it isn’t pleasant plus there could be risks, you need to stay on the base with Jon and the others” he said to the young lady.
"But..." she said a little feebly, "at least is there something here I could help with?"
The man shook his head.
“Im afraid not miss, it’s a risky situation and Jon let alone Alex want to put you in an sort of dangerous situation, we made a promise to your mother and dragon to take care of you, Jon will make sure your kept up to date” Dr Hinton said putting things on a trolley to wheel to the sky dome.
Tara knew she couldn't fight it and demand to go. Besides, her shyness wouldn't make her that bold to even attempt.
She imagined Icarus tearing down the door if he found out that any of them allowed her into harms way.
"Okay.... tell everyone to be safe."
“Will do, you be needed when we return I am sure, chin up” Dr Hinton said as he left the labs with Tara in tow and all.

Tara didn’t know what to do with herself after the doctor left. She was worried about the team but knew that the man was right, there was very little she could do and in any case she would likely be a liability if she went.
Jon seemed like he had his hands full dealing with the situation on his end so she decided it was best to keep out of the way.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket as she stepped into her room and she noticed she had notifications flashing on her computer.
“Oh no,” she groaned, seeing that she had missed multiple calls from home.
She put down her bag and called the number back on her computer and almost instantly the call was picked up.
“Oh thank heaven,” said her mother, Relieved, “We saw the news that something happened at that fancy building in Vancouver. I thought it looked like one of yours.”
“That’s the one in the city mom. I’m mostly on the island, far away,” Tara said, trying to reassure her.
“Is that Tara? Is she alright?” came a voice, Icarus, from off screen.
Her mother tilted her laptop so that the dragon’s face came into view. He looked like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
“You are well, Tara. Good.”
“Yes, yes. I wasn’t allowed to attend. Something happened at the mainland office but I haven’t been told what yet. Everyone is busy running around, trying to figure it out. I wasn’t allowed to go.”
“I’m glad they kept you there. I won’t have to give anyone an earful,” said her mother a little briskly, the worry of her daughter’s fate dissipating slowly.
“You knew what I was getting into….. coming here…” said Tara, raising a brow.
Her mother lifted her chin, “I know. The risks don’t make me happy but you’re just like your father and I won’t keep you from your passions. Just don’t expect me to be so carefree about it.”
Tara had to laugh a little, “I don’t expect that at all. Anyway, I’m fine. I’m not going anywhere but I am going to go see if Jon has a second to tell me what is going on so I’ll let you go okay?”
“Be safe, alright sweetheart?”
“I promise,” replied Tara. “Love you guys, bye!”
She hung up the call and turned back for the door, wondering if things had settled down enough for her to find out anything else.
Korrin had patrolled all parts of the building that would allow him to pass through without damage. The dragon was still growing and no longer fit in conventionally sized structures built for humans. There was little to find, however. Between Brogan’s patrols and the dragons presence, there didn’t seem much likeliness of a threat returning with all this firepower to face. Still, Alex took precautions and lived with a ‘better safe than sorry’ mentality, which had saved their skin more than once.
“You checked that window for the either time. Brogan’s forces are patrolling so we should be okay, big guy,” Kris said, noticing the green dragon and sensing his mood.
Korrin tracked a cars route down on the street below before speaking.
“Its no harm being too careful.” What else can I do other than watch and keep an eye out for anything off?” said the dragon, only taking his eyes off the street below for a second to look at Kris.
"I know Alex wants you inside the building, maybe patrol the corridor if you like, maybe a roof patrol, but do not go far" Kris answered.
"I can't go on the roof until the ship comes back for us. Alex doesn't want us associated with this if possible." Said the dragon before he yawned, displaying the fearsome massive canines he possessed.
"Patrol the corridor then, keep yourself amused, from the CCTV I can see we are good at the moment" Kris said looking at the screens.
“Alright,” said the dragon, getting to his feet. He wished he could stretch his wings, the small spaces made him feel confined and antsy.
He walked the loop of the corridor a few times, passing by wide windows. He could see news vans down on the street below by the lobby of their building but everything had been taped off, restricting their access.
“Like vultures,” he said with a snort, “The second they get wind of something they swarm…”
“You talking to yourself again?” came Tarok’s voice from behind him.
Korrin turned to the coastal, an unimpressed look on his face.
“You might have to get an evaluation done by the doctors if you keep chatting to yourself,” the blue dragon teased.
“Not the time for jokes, Tarok.” Said Korrin, stern.
Tarok’s crest fell a bit, and the dragon frowned. “I’m not trying to make light of what happened here…” he said sounding a little defensive, “I am just trying to keep everyone together and not let us all sink into the darkness of what happened.”
Korrin sighed, he knew that Tarok wasn’t trying to make a game of all this.
“I know, I just don’t like that we’ve lost more of our team. We can’t seem to go a year without somebody lining one of us up in their crosshairs.”
The coastal shifted his weight from one deadly clawed foot to another, “I know. I hate it too. We work a dangerous field, though. Just like officers, and military personnel, there are risks and we all have to accept them.”
“I can accept the risks, I just can’t accept someone trying to take us down at every turn,” grumbled the green dragon.
“We’ll find out who did this and put a stop to it. I promise it,” swore Tarok as Korrin nodded firmly in their pact.

The doctors worked on the crime scene for a good few hours, wearing protective clothing and gathering evidence from the room, all 3 doctors were working flat out to piece together what awful events had gone on here.
Dr Francis and Dr Charles worked together as the two had forensics background, with Dr Linton using his knowledge of computer systems to gather digital evidence and to use the computer to build up a virtual picture of what happened, along with his mobile analysis machines.
Kris, Amanda and the dragons were kept out as to not contaminate the evidence further, same went with the damaged shuttle craft, Dr Francis had wanted it left to do forensic analysis, Alex borrowed an EA shuttle back to the base on Quadra island.
Kris had been ensuring the security inside was good, despite the growing media interest, Brogan’s officers were doing a sterling job in keeping them back and ensuring the dragons were safe.
However, as time went on Kris focus seemed to drift as there was nothing more to report as he kept Jon up to date with everything going off.
He sighed and let his head rest on his hand as he stared at the four security screens for the millionth time but nothing had changed, apart from officers patrolling the area downstairs.
"Hanging in there?" Asked Amanda as she leaned against a wall, arms folded as they waited, "shouldn't be too much longer."
Kris nodded lightly.
“They have been a good few hours in there, collecting samples and data, we are lucky I guess we got two skilled forensic officers on our team, but gosh they take their time, the criminals could be in the US by now” Kris said.
"They have to take their time to ensure their everything is done correctly and that if there are any answers to be found that they aren't lost in the rush. I know it's frustrating but it's the only process we've got right now," replied the woman, "and 'gosh'? Stop stealing my words."
Kris smiled lightly.
“You’re a bad influence Amanda, I can feel my advanced vocab seeping away, being around you and Tarok, the man lightly teased back to the woman as the dragons returned from their patrol round the corridors.
Amanda pretended to be offended but then gave Tarok a small smile as the dragons approached. "Hey, anything to report?"
The coastal shook his head.
"Nothing," added korrin.
Kris was about to add his two cents to the conversation when the doors opened and Dr Charles came out, still in his forensic outfit as he removed his face mask and approached the team, Kris stood up from his chair as the doctor approached, the man looking a little tired.
Tarok's sail lifted a bit in surprise as Dr. Charles came into view in a full forensics suit.
"You look intense," commented Amanda.
Dr Charles nodded lightly.
“It is to preserve the crime scene, it was already contaminated, not intentionally by the RCMP first responders but it is ok, we collected everything we needed, Dr Francis and Dr Linton are packing up their equipment, I think we can contact Alex and ask for a transport to pick us up” he said to the others.
“What about this office, do you guys need to come back tomorrow?” Kris asked and to this the doctor shook his head.
“We got what we needed, I recommend keep this office shut and the staff away, I think Alex would agree, we all suffered tremendous loss of life, the rest can be done in the labs on Quadra island” Charles said.
"Sounds appropriate, let's head back if everything is wrapped up here then," suggested Amanda.
“I get a transport ordered here to take us all back, I inform Alex of the situation” Kris said.
“Ask for Jon to ask Tara to prepare the labs, she knows the techniques and preparation, so we can get to work quickly” Dr Charles said.
“Will do doc” Kris replied as he contacted the base.
Kris spoke to Alex and informed him of the situation, he had also provided the commander with what had been done in regards the dragons and their own work, Alex was going to send a transport to pick them all up plus inform Brogan of the plans.
Once it was all discussed Kris seemed ready to help pack up and get things locked down so no one could tamper or enter the offices, with this kind of attack, it be safer for the office staff to stay away and keep them safe in their own homes.
"So," Alex began as he approached Jon. "We have four confirmed casualties, one being Martin our pilot during our descent. The doctors have collected any evidence on scene and will be processing it here. Brogan had his team involved in the investigation as well," he said before spotting Tara.
" Doctor Charles and Arthur will be back shortly, Tara can you prep the labs for them?"
The young woman nodded, "yes, of course sir." She replied.
Jon nodded lightly at Alex comments, watching Tara go off to prepare the labs.
“Do you need me in the hornet to escort the shuttlecraft to Quadra?” Jon asked the commander.
Alex thought for a moment, "Yeah, couldn't hurt." Nodded the commander.
Jon gave a respectful nod, now he had been given permission.
“Ok sir, I best get ready, I’ve sent a message to James and Alyia as well, just to be on the lookout but I think they are relatively safe, might I suggested ensuring the radar is covered at all times, until we know this threat is perhaps limited to Vancouver and its surrounding areas?” Jon asked Alex.
"We will be bumping up our threat level and ensure that we follow the protocol as such. Good call about the radar, I'll make sure its active," said Alex
“I do a rotation rota for our agents so there is always someone manning it, Dr Linton updated Robert’s base defences so they are all up and running ok, anyways I best go” Jon said as Alex wished him luck as the man made his way to where the hornet was stationed.
Meanwhile on Vancouver island, Jon had informed Alyia and James what had gone on and that extra precautions being put in place for the whole team, Jon advised the two of them to be careful, despite being on Vancouver Island.
After an hour James was getting ready to go to the shops and grab some food, he did not think the risk was for them as he got ready to go out, Alyia came in and saw James getting ready to go out and seemed alarmed.
"Oh, sir, we can get groceries another time..." suggested Alyia, worried about all these events going on and not wanting her Attilu to be in danger.
James waved off her concerns, thinking she was being overly cautious again.
"Ya worry too much lass, i cannae not gooo out" James said as he put on his shoes and grabbed some bags.
"But... don't you think it's better, just to wait a bit? Until we know more at least?" She said hesitantly, not wanting him to go.
"Ya cannae wrap me in a cotton ball Lass, ya goota take soome risks, besides i aint high on the list" James replied.
"Yes you are," Alyia protested, "Someone tried to take your life last year, don't you remember? If you must go, please let me accompany you to ensure that you're safe."
James rolled his eyes, his frustration bubbling and passing through the link.
"Ack..Fiiine then...move ya scaled rump then..yaa carrying the bags Lass" James said grumbling to himself with some colourful language, not impressed he had himself yielded to her suggestion.
Despite his grumbling, Alyia was a little relieved, "Yes, sir." she said, grabbing his things and following him. In the very least she was happy to be running errands with the man.
James walked with Alyia alongside him, providing protection and a visible guard over the man, James seemed to be quiet as he walked along to the local supermarket.
Alyia attracted attention as she walked with the man, people coming up outside asking for photos and to speak with her, it was the same when they entered the supermarket.
Alyia being small enough to navigate round, but the wide aisles certainly helped and gave James and the dragoness some room.
Alyia had loved being out, trotting along behind James through the supermarket. However, her errand running never went without notice. People stared and came up to her to ask questions or request a photo which she was always shyly happy to oblige.
James stayed ahead of the dragoness looking at the items and putting them in the trolley, he looked back to see the dragoness chatting and having photos, it began to annoy and irritate the Scot, he wanted to be in and out but it was not possible with the dragoness with him, attracting attention, he shook his head and tried not to blow up in front of all these people.
Through the link Alyia could sense a growing discontent. Graciously as she could, the little dragoness excused herself from the little crowd that she had collected and trotted after the man. She gently put a specific little box of his favourite goodies in his basket and smiled at him.
James looked at the dragoness, after a moment of silence he spoke, ending the silence between them.
"Ya cookin lass tonight" he said as he grabbed the peppercorn sauce, putting it in the trolley and moving on.
"Sure," she replied, "What would you like for sides?"
James turned round and replied.
"Chunky chips and.....salad..there healthy scot" James said though the last bit was reluctantly said to the crème dragoness, he knew she was trying to make him be healthier, sneaking in stuff into his usual food.
he smiled at him, "Thank you," she said, grabbing a few more things off the shelf.
Soon they made it to the till, after some more people taking photos and chatting, James wanted to just get out of there and be home, it wasn’t to be however the man went on to rant about Canada’s insistence on not putting tax on the prices, this rant went on for 10 minutes before Alyia guided him out.
“Have a nive day sir!” chirped the cashier, this made James cringe as he replied that he did not like the saying and it was a useless Americanism.
With their bags of groceries hanging from her wings, the dragoness hummed happily to herself as they walked back home.
"Thank you for letting me come," she said after a moment, "It made me feel a lot better. I'll get dinner started when we get in."
James nodded lightly.
"I still think ya cooming along was pointless Lass....i can look after myself ta" James replied, shaking his head lightly.
"I had fun. Running errands is more enjoyable with company," she said.
"Hah, Lass the protector of the mad scot" James shook his head.
"Though I never said...ya know thanks foor stoopin that 4x4" James said quietly, he remembered he had not thanked her properly since she put herself in the way of him being flat as a pancake.
Oh, ah, well, you're welcome," she said a little shyly. "Someone had to."
"I mean it Lass....i was ya know a bit concerned for ya..yooou know as were bonded and all" James said, the man finding it awkward to say what he meant, but least he acknowledged her bravery.
Alyia was pleased that he appreciated her effort but she believed that there was no other option for her. Protecting her Attilu was the only thing she could have done in that moment.
"I'd do it again, though.... if you can help not getting run over again that would be lovely." she said with a half-stifled laugh.
James frowned and shook his head.
"I bear that in mind lass, now mooove a bit quicker...im hungry" the man said returning to his usual demeanour with the dragoness.
She smiled to herself and kicked up her pace to a trot, already planning dinner in her mind.
Soon they arrived back home as James opened the door and the two of them walked in, James taking off his shoes.
“Timers oon Lass, get crackin or it be Alyia kebab” he replied as he sat down on the sofa and turned the TV on, “Oh a beer too Lass ooor I might end up hydrating” he said cheekily.

Back on Quadra the shuttle had returned with the doctors and the rest of the team. Forensic analysis and testing began the moment the doctors set foot in the labs that Tara had prepped for the,. Korrin and Kris had done rounds along the base perimeter with Tarok and Amanda, checking and testing their surveillance and security equipment. Afterward they did full sweeps of the island, a long and tiring task but one necessary in light of recent events. It was dark by the time they got in and the dragons were exhausted. The day had been busy right from dawn and hadn’t slowed down.
Amanda took off her dragon’s gear and send him ahead to their quarters while she put things away, hoping that tomorrow would give them answers and set them in a direction to figuring out this latest disaster.
In the beach house Alyia served up dinner in short order but any further chat with her Attilu was out now that football was on TV. The only conversation to be had now would be his angry shouts to those on screen.
Alyia didn’t mind of course. She wanted to contact the base anyway to find out if there were any new developments. She hadn’t heard much all day and James had told her only briefly what had happened earlier that day.
Once the dishes were cleared and the kitchen tidied up, she crept past the man while he shouted wildly and settled in her room. Her computer screen came alive as she called Tarok back on the base. It rang a number of times but he finally answered.
“Hey, yes it’s me,” said the little dragoness, tilting the screen so that she could see better.
“Sorry, we just got back from Vancouver. I heard the com ringing and had to run,” he explained as she watched him settle. Amanda moved in the background, setting her things down and waved briefly at the dragoness before disappearing.
“So is there any news?” Alyia asked.
“Yes and no,” said Tarok with a bit of a shrug, “You were told about what happened?”
“Well, James was told and he said that there were three people dead at the city office,” she explained, “That’s all he told me.”
Tarok thought it surprising that this was all she was told. Maybe James was actually attempting to not let her worry with what else went on.
“Well, we lost one more,” he said as he watched her expression fall, “We took the shuttle over and someone shot our pilot as we were landing…”
Alyia gasped and put her paws to her mouth in horror, “Stars, no. The man… ohh Martin?”
Tarok nodded and she looked crestfallen, “No… oh stars that’s awful, Tarok. His family…. All their families…”
“I know, Aly. It’s terrible. Alex is currently speaking with next of kin now. He won’t be back at the base for a while. There’s a lot to be done. The doctors have been working tirelessly away at trying to sort out the crime scene and find out who did this because we have no leads right now. Jon is collecting local surveillance.”
“What about the rest of you? With the pilot down what happened? No one else was hurt, right? Korrin? Kris?”
“No, no we’re all fine. Alex jumped in to pilot us to safety and Brogan’s team was already there so there was no other shots fired. Whoever did it fled,” he said and watched as she seemed to shift uncomfortably.
“Don’t worry Aly, Alex has the security level maxed and you’re safe on the island, the house is set up for that, remember?” he said, trying to shift the conversation so that she won’t be consumed in worry.
“I know… I had trouble stopping James from going out today. He was set on getting some errands done but I didn’t want him to go.”
“Did you manage to get him to hang tight?” inquired the blue dragon. “I know with our presence being hidden at the office there shouldn’t be much media inquiring about us personally.”
Alyia shook her head just as a series of angry shouts came from the room beyond.
“I think the other team scored….” She said, looking towards the door briefly before turning back to Tarok, “But no, he was set on going but I convinced him to let me accompany him. It’s fun running errands with company.”
Tarok smiled a little at this, wondering if James felt the same. He stifled a chuckle, “That’s good. Anyway Aly, I’m going to go get cleaned up. Today was eventful and not all good. I’m exhausted.”
“Of course. I’ll see you all tomorrow. James and I will have some work to do in his office.”
The screen resumed its normal summery background as Tarok disappeared. Alyia sat back on her heels and let out a worried sigh. Four more people of their team gone in the blink of an eye. Sensitive to a fault, the dragoness couldn’t help but feel such grief for them and their families though not wanting to annoy James, she bit down those feelings and set to distract herself and her worries with a book.
In Tarok’s quarters the dragon had cleaned up and slumped onto his bed. Curling up he tucked his nose under his wing and gave a sigh.
“You okay, Blue?” asked Amanda, returning from getting cleaned up herself. “How is Alyia.”
“Obviously upset about the loss we suffered. She’s going to worry even worse now. James hadn’t told her all the facts.”
“She would have found out anyway, Blue. It was good that you told her,” said the woman, sitting down and leaning against his folded wing.
“The day started off so well…”
Tarok nuzzled her cheek and curled his neck about her, shielding the woman, “It did. Peace and quiet don’t last very long here, do they?”
“No, no they don’t,” she replied, stroking his black marked muzzle. “Get some sleep, tomorrow will be a new day.”

The next morning the 3 doctors had decided amongst themselves that with all their investigation work that had been done at the crime scene, along with the collection of digital evidence such as CCTV recordings and analysis done on Dr Hinton’s computer systems they now had enough to present their findings to the rest of the team.
“We haven’t missed anything have we? last thing I want to do is miss anything, considering we lost 4 people” Dr Charles said to the other two as he signed off his digital paper work.
“I think so, I inputted all the information into the main computer and I think we are all agreed this is the most highly probable outcome” Dr Hinton said as Dr Francis nodded in agreement.
Dr Charles seemed to accept the consensus from the other doctors that everyone was happy with their conclusions.
“I let Jon know as he is in charge while Alex is away with HR” the man said as he contacted Jon and informed him of their findings and they would present it to the team in the common.
Soon enough there was a base wide announcement from Jon.
“All senior staff and dragons to the common, briefing will begin in 10 minutes” Jon said over the announcing system in the base, the teams would soon be up and meeting the doctors who would present their findings to the Team, hopefully providing some much-needed answers.
"I wonder if there is some news," said Amanda as she stood up and patted her dragon's side, "Come on, Blue, let's go find out."
The coastal rose to his feet and stretched before he followed her out.
In the room down the hall Korrin was already at the door, waiting for his Attilu, "Let's go see what's going on."
"Alright, we best get down there if Jon is on the tannoy" replied Kris as he followed his dragon.
"Yeah," agreed the dragon as he held open the door.
Soon the team gathered in the common where Jon and Nicholas, one of the security agents were waiting for everyone to gather, the doctors not there as yet.
"What's the news, Jon?" Asked korrin as the dragons and their riders gathered in the room.
The man turned and replied to the green dragon.
"The doctors are coming to give us a report on what went on in the offices, Alyia and James will watch through video link" Jon explained.
The dragons nodded and Amanda leaned close to Tarok, looking grim at what news the doctors might bring.
The dragons stood together, waiting to find out what the doctors discovered.
The doctors soon arrived with their laptop and tablets as Dr Hinton brought the one tablet that Alyia and James were looking out of, currently in their living room on Vancouver island.
Dr Francis set up the laptop and linked it to the larger screen and loaded up a program as Korrin seemed a little inpatient for everything to get going and explained.
“Easy” Kris said putting his hand on the green dragon’s shoulder to steady him.
Dr Charles spoke after clearing his throat as the team hushed to hear what the man had to say.
“Thanks for gathering, as you know myself, Dr Hinton and Dr Francis have been working non stop at the crime scenes to determine what happened, as well as reports from the morgue in Vancouver where we lost 4 people” he said as the team seemed sullen.
“What have you found out doctor?” Kris asked as Dr Charles shook his head and sighed lightly.
“We have…identified the weapon used in the attack, the weapon used high impact, armour piercing bullets from what was discovered from a type of sniper rifle” Dr Charles explained.
“However it is a very specific sniper rifle” Dr Frnacis said as he typed on the laptop and brought up the model of the gun as Jon seemed to look concerned.
“These Sniper rifles are not standard issue and they are specifically designed for use by specialised Torchwood operators” Dr Francis said.
“Meaning….” Kris said with apprehension.
“It means the people who attacked us are our own, Torchwood operatives” Dr Charles said, this comment shocked the room.
The dragons seemed shocked and uneasy. Korrin cast a glance at kris to try and gauge his reaction.
Kris seemed surprised and shocked like everyone else at this news.
“We got evidence of this?” Jon asked.
“Yes sir, using the CCTV we have done a computerised reconstruction of the scene and what happened, using the weapon and with all data taken and inputted into the computer” Dr Francis said as he played the simulation
Alyia looked horrified and shrank back from the screen.
Korrin growled low, while Amanda and Tarok shared an expression of surprise.
Finally after a bit of silenceKris spoke.
“So we are looking for traitors or criminals who managed to gain our weapons or what?” the man asked.
“We are not sure, we reckon the short was fired at a distance of 4000 Metres from computer calculations, the aim and trajectory of the bullets” Dr Francis said as the screen highlighted the bullets path.
“That is impossible, the longest shot on record was 3,400 metres back in 2018, there is no one who has come close, plus to shoot at a moving target at that range” Jon said.
“I know but I am just telling you, a very highly skilled sniper took out 4 members of staff at a range of 4000 metres with a Torchwood special issue, high powered sniper rifle and they can shoot” Dr Charles said as Jon scratched his head as the news sunk in…they had traitors within their organization.

It was a horrifying realization that there was something within their secretive and maximum vetted organization that wanted to cause them harm. They seemed gobsmacked that someone… one of their own could turn on them like that.
Korrin, however had already begun thinking about the next steps in getting them close to bringing their attacker down.
"So..." Korrin started, thinking aloud, "If these weapons are specially made for Torchwood only, there should only be a small number in existence, right? They should all be specially registered, serial numbers or something along those lines. Someone must know who has what. Could we track down any that might have gone missing?"
Tarok thought this was rather a clever idea from the green dragon and nodded along, “Yeah, that might give us a clue.”
"We are looking now at the inventories of all torchwood agencies," Dr. Hinton said to Korrin.
“At least that’s underway. Hopefully we’ll hear from that inquiry soon,” said the tank of a dragon.
"What about the CCTV footage? Was any person or vehicle caught on anything? Any sort of description of the attacker?" asked Amanda, brushing back a loose strand of hair that had escaped her ponytail, “There HAD to be something.”
"Sadly I checked it all, no camera caught anyone apart from the chaos, all we know and identified is the sniper rifle and bullets used," Charles said showing the details on the screen.
The group seemed frustrated at this. Nothing had been captured on camera. That seemed so unlikely but the doctors where thorough men and would not have overlooked anything like that.
Korrin grumbled at this, "So what can we do other than sit and wait until the inventory check is done?" he asked, looking to Jon for an answer. While not officially Alex’s second in command, the commander had handed off the responsibility while he dealt with the aftermath in Vancouver.
"We are going to monitor all areas of Vancouver, the office will be closed, however the fact you guys were attacked, makes me think they wanted to lure us out into the open," Jon replied as Kris frowned.
"They wanted to see how we react" the man said.
"Does that mean we should stay inside..." asked Alyia apprehensively from the computer screen. Any excuse to keep James inside and away from danger was something she’d latch onto.
"I need to ask Alex for final confirmation, until then I think patrols to be suspended and the dragons kept away from prying eyes," Jon said as James grumbled and got up, leaving Alyia as he grumbled again loudly off screen.
"That’s bull, we need to be patrolling" Kris said to Jon.
Tarok shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot, knowing that this might get a little heated. Korrin wanted to be the first line of defence for the team and absolutely hated being put on the backburner while things were sorted out. If anything made the dragon more upset than that, Tarok did not know of it.
"Yeah," agreed Korrin, his hackle scales already twitching in irritation, "How are we supposed to protect the team and the base if we're not out there? Something or someone could have their sights on us right now. "
"Do you want to be shot Korrin? We cannot risk it" Jon replied as Kris shook his head disagreeing.
“I’m sorry guys, but Jon is right. We witnessed our pilot get shot…” she hesitated briefly, not wanting to get graphic but knowing there was no way around it, “In the head, in a moving shuttle with a specialized glass windshield from over four kilometers away… The dragon’s armour can only withstand so much, and it doesn’t cover nearly half of them at best. We can’t risk having them out there just yet, especially if the threat can shoot us down from a distance without even knowing they are there.”
She suppressed a shudder at the thought of Tarok falling from the sky, no sign of a threat to be seen.
Korrin frowned at this but didn’t contest when Amanda said. While he was a bit hotheaded and eager to get out there and rip whatever threat might be near to shreds, he wasn’t thick in the head. He knew there were dangers and the extreme level of danger of their situation was now becoming apparent.
Alyia looked very pale on the computer screen, as if all the blood had drained from her face. Tarok cast a glance at her and realized that all this was probably horrifying the little dragoness. She was afraid of thunder and the dark so something like this hanging over her head was the last thing she’d likely want to deal with.
“We’ll be fine. Once we get news of what is going on we can take the next steps,” Tarok said to the group, though he was trying to sound confident for the worried dragoness.
"All I can say, for now is sit tight and once Alex gets back, we can move forward," Jon said.
"Come along Korrin, we best get something to eat, " Kris said, feeling the dragon’s frustration.
The two of them walked off together, Korrin grumbling under his breath to his Attilu while Amanda and Tarok lingered in the room as the others went their separate ways.
“This isn’t good is it?” said Tarok.
Amanda shook her head, “No it’s not. Alex should be back soon though. He won’t want to be gone from the base long with all this going on. Do you want to go join Korrin and get something to eat?”
“No, I’m not hungry, besides he’s just going to be grumpy that he can’t be out there,” said her dragon, looking down at her with his expressive yellow eyes.
“Fair enough. Let’s go see if we can be any help in the control room while we wait for the commander,” she suggested, leading her dragon away.
Back in the beach house, Alyia had shut off the computer screen and went about locking all the doors and windows while James was occupied in another room. She knew he would brush off this threat like it was nothing but the skitter little dragon couldn’t help but fret, closing the blinds before curling up in the living room.

The following two days Alex returned from his difficult duties as commander of Torchwood 7, the man seemed pleased that Jon had taken a step up and had kept the dragons safe, despite Korrin and Kris loud objections.
Today, he was holding a meeting in his office with Jon and Dr Charles to discuss the best way to go forward, now they knew there was a potential torchwood sniper on the loose in Vancouver or BC.
"I know you've been keeping me up to date on the majority of it while I was away but has there been anything else? The inventory check?" Asked Alex.
Jon got his tablet out and checked the results on the screen before replying.
“We have had Torchwood 5, Torchwood 9 and Torchwood 6 respond back to us, they are the ones carrying the specific weapons and design identified in Dr Charles forensic analysis and all stocks and ammo are full, there has been no reports of anything unusual with deliveries or anything like that” Jon replied to Alex.
The commander rubbed at his temple, "what about the other bases? Just waiting to hear back?"
Jon looked down at his tablet as Dr Charles looked at his reports on his own tablet.
“The other bases do not have those weapons to hand, that is including us, its only really the larger base organizations that seem to have these sniper rifles” Jon replied.
"So nothings missing... which means that these were manufactured without Torchwood signing off on them," said Alex.
Dr Charles and Jon exchanged an uncomfortable look with one another, about some of the information they had obtained.
"What's with the look?" Asked the commander, catching the exchange.
Jon looked a little uncomfortable as Dr Charles spoke, the topic was not an easy one to mention.
“There is one other organization which had these sniper rifles and rounds to go in them, in fact they designed the bullets in house, we found them on Archive records” Dr Charles said handing the tablet over to Alex for him to see.
The man looked over the information on the tablet, a growing frown masking his face. "I'm assuming we don't have tabs on these ones...."
Jon shook his head.
“There was no real record kept of the inventories, there was not much there to count, its only recently now the archives is under new management, we had access, but even so their information had allot of corrupted files as well, so we got all we got” Jon said.
Alex cursed under his breath. A dead end. "Well at least it's... something." He said, trying not to sound frustrated. "Any data onto why it was the office that was attacked and not the team. They were out in public at that time. I hate to say it but anything could have happened to them. "
Dr Charles replied to Alex question.
“I have a theory, but no solid evidence to back it up” the doctor said as Jon continued explaining.
“The doctors and myself think the attack on the office was planned to see what kind of response would be expected, then the attack on the shuttle was a test again how our team would handle it, I suspect whoever did this knows we have dragons but not based at the Vancouver offices” the man explained to Alex.
The commander nodded, "and so far our response has been silence. I could almost hear Kris and korrin protesting from the mainland, so thank you for handling that, Jon. I know we can't just go running out guns blazing without knowing a thing about what we are dealing with here. Our security level is still up? Good. Nothing to report from the island monitoring system?" He asked.
“Yes sir, the base is on heightened alert and the radar is constantly being manned by the staff, I suspended patrols but yes Korrin and Kris were the first to complain, I cannot blame them, Korrin is very much a young Forge wanting to protect this place, Alyia has taken precautions but I suspect James will be throwing cutlery and other sharp pointy objects if he isn’t kept busy” Jon said as Dr Charles smiled lightly at the last comment.
“I reckon we are safe on Vancouver island and Quadra Island, so in theory we could keep patrols close” suggested the doctor.
"With our monitoring systems we'd know if anything came within a few kilometres from the island..." said Alex, thinking out loud. "I suppose that the dragons could do runs across the grounds. Armoured up of course."
Jon nodded in agreement, it be good to keep the dragons and the riders busy, but within the radius of the base.
“I agree sir, keep them close but with a sense of purpose, get Kris and Amanda to keep them active and with purpose, I would also suggest we do something for James and Alyia” the man said to Alex.
"Just have to think of what we would assign them to that would keep them out of harms way. James' job keeps him in public spaces. The dragons had a number of public events lined up but he'll have to come up with some story as to why they can't attend." Replied the commander.
“I can send work for James to do, say to Alyia as long as they do not leave the island, they should be ok, have James work from home and to come up with reasons why the dragons cannot attend” Jon suggested.
“We can scramble the signals so noone could track the emails and signals from James laptop” Dr Charles said.
“Will Tara still be ok here with the base on Alert?” Jon asked Alex.
Alex nodded, "for now anyway. I've sent some security personnel to the ranch to ensure Icarus and the families safety though she'd be safer here in the base," he explained.
Jon nodded in agreement as a knock on the door of Alex office as Nicholas appeared.
“Sorry to disturb your meeting sirs, but Torchwood 5, Jack Harkness on the line for you Alex” Nicolas said to Alex as Jon and Dr Charles got up and nodded to leave their leader to answer the call.
Alex straightened himself up a bit and answered the call, "Alex here," he said.
Jack appeared on the other line and greeted the commander.
“Hi Alex, sorry for the call, I been updated with your current situation from Mark, we sent you the sniper rifle inventory to you, I hope that has helped you out or at least tried to narrow your search” Jack replied.
"Thank you, Jack. The list was helpful, in a way. Every one was accounted for across the different facilities. No inconstancies with ammunition inventory as well but my team did discovered that there was record of the archives possessing this equipment and even manufacturing the ammunition on site, though the details of this have been corrupted," Alex told him.
Jack nodded lightly.
“I know, the new head of the archives, Adam Davies has said that allot of files were wiped and corrupted, during our assault a few years back, they are still putting things together, the only thing that worries me is we have had odd and strange things happen here, especially with two of our former staff” Jack explained to the torchwood 7 commander.
"What do you mean?" Asked Alex. "Strange things?"
Jack seemed a little off or uncomfortable talking about it, even Alex could see the man seemed a little uneasy.
“Two of our security people, Daniel and Martin basically were changed or copied, we do not know but they were imposters, well we think they are but somehow they seemed to be created for a purpose to infiltrate our facility, we are still running tests but basically this information is Torchwood classified, all I can say is keep your eyes open, just in case it could be a copied Torchwood agent” Jack said.
Alex looked at him in disbelief, "someone CLONED part of your team?" He asked. "What of... what happened to the actual team members?"
Jack shook his head lightly.
“Daniel and Martin or the original versions were found dead, it seems that anyone cloned is killed off, we do not know how or why this happens, we are still investigating, we are trying to find out but had other issues on Kilara as well, all I can advise is keep your eyes open Alex” Jack advised.
"Christ, my sympathy to the loss of some of your team. I'll keep a closer eye on mine so thank you for letting us know," said Alex, "we will keep you in the loop if we have anything come up in our own investigations. Be safe over there, Commander."
Jack smiled lightly.
“You too, we send you any information we get, Jack out” the man said as the message ended.
Meanwhile on Vancouver island where James and Alyia were currently residing, the dragoness had gone into a panic, ensuring James was safe, much to the man’s disapproval at the crème dragoness meek and skitty attitude, today would be no different.
Alyia had been pacing around the house, checking the doors and locks. The beach house's west side was dominated by windows that looked out onto the ocean but every curtain had been drawn. Highly unusual for the beachy home and it made it rather dim inside.
James walked out dressed for the day, but he frowned, not smelling coffee or breakfast on the go, all he saw was Alyia pacing round.
“What the hell ya dooin Lass, wheres ma coffeh eh” James said to the crème dragoness.
"Oh, oh dear. I forgot to turn it on. It's all set," she said, flicking the switch and the smell of coffee rose up.
James checked his watch and cursed.
“Ack, we be late foor the base, when is the shuttle coomin too take us to base?” James asked the dragoness, as he was gathering his laptop and work.
"I was thinking we could work from home?" Said alyia hopefully, pushing a cup of coffee into his hands. "I could make a nice lunch and you wouldn't have to go to the base."
James took the coffee and looked at Alyia oddly.
“What……what ya mean work from home Lass, we been off foor weeks, I got work to doo” he said starting to get irritable, his anger and irritation bubbling via the link.
"Yes," said Aliya, trying to temper his anger a bit, "but, I already have your schedule in order and none of it really requires you to be at the facility.. maybe you can even sneak a peek at the football game on your break..." she said with a hopeful smile.
James seemed to go quiet as he looked at his coffee, steaming up from the mug he held in his hands, the man was quiet seemingly stewing over this news, perhaps the fear he might erupt and start chucking things around in anger.
Aylia ducked her head a bit in submission realizing that her attempt at getting him to stay inside wasn't going to work, "I'll get the shuttle here quick then..." she said before hurrying off to the phone.
Before Alyia got to the phone, James sighed heavily and he looked over to where Alyia was.
“Lass……” he said pausing, seemingly having difficulkty
Alyia had the phone in her paw, ready to dial but paused, looking over her shoulder at him hesitantly.
James finally managed to get his words out without losing his temper.
“Whats…what is foor dinner” he asked as he looked at the dragoness, obviously his subtle way of listening to her and taking her advice.
"I had steak marinating," she offered, a small hint of a smile returning, "chips and that peppercorn sauce and sal- well maybe not salad," she said tying to gauge his reaction while she spoke.
James nodded lightly.
“Ya learning Lass, don’t fookin push ya luck or I be avin dragon burger, deep fried girl, now…a fry up would be nice” James said getting out his laptop to work on the table.
"I'll put it on the menu for tomorrow," she said, relieved that he had decided to work at home. She wouldn't have to worry as much if he just stayed put.
James powered up his laptop and began to get his work documents online but he looked at Alyia who seemed pleased he was staying home to work.
“Ya goona stare at me all day lass?, breakfast doesn’t cook itself” James said, going back to his usual cheeky and blunt tone.
"Right! I'll get started," she said, searching for a pan to get things going.
Jon had informed Kris and Amanada that after speaking with Alex, they could do a close patrol round the area, but to keep close to the base, until more information was obtained as to who or what was behind the attack on their offices, ensuring the dragons were kept active but within the safety of the facility.
The dragons were discussing the news in the Aerodrome as they got ready before their riders came down.
"At least we can go out," Tarok was saying, trying to placate the green dragon with chatter. "It's not like we're under strict lockdown."
"I know but what's the use? Our systems can detect any threat from miles away. We're just redundant with it running." Grumbled korrin.
Kris and Amanda were also getting ready in the locker rooms, kitting up to ride on the dragons, essentially round the block, Kris was feeling a bit unsure about everything and not sure how to deal with Korrin’s frustrations.
"Your tank is a bit moody eh?" Commented Amanda as she laced up her boots. "More so than usual I mean."
Kris smiled and nodded lightly.
“He want’s action and wants to be useful, he’s out grown any tests or challenges I’ve thrown at him, he wont see these patrols as worthwhile” Kris explained.
Amanda nodded, standing up and folding her arms, "he has certainly grown out of his usual training. Once things aren't so up in the air we can figure out some new things to challenge him."
Kris agreed, perhaps Korrin needed new challenges and things to keep him active and on point.
“Well on one patrol, I was mucking about and hid under a very large log and he just hefted it up, as if it was nothing, finding me hiding from me, I reckon a rematch with Ardon is in order” Kris said teasing as he walked with Amanda to the air dome.
"Think he can handle the golden boy? He looks like he's getting giant from the clips I've seen of him on TV." She said with a smile.
Kris nodded assertively.
“I reckon he can, size isn’t everything, Korrin is compact package, how about Tarok, will he beat Zyra?” he said putting the question to Amanda about the coastal, since it was close last time.
"He was so close last time..." she replied, "but she beat him on the straightaway. Scary fast, that dragoness. If it was a course with tighter turns and such, I can see him winning."
Kris agreed but smiled.
“So, your in the same boat as me, rematch town then” he grinned nudging Amanda lightly.
The woman laughed, "maybe we will get to see next year. Apparently, the Torchwood gathering is to be a yearly or every other year kind of event."
Korrin was still trying to get on his complete armour when the humans approached.
"We might need some assistance," said Tarok sheepishly.
Kris approached his dragon seeing the green tank putting on his armour, he look puzzled before he realised which type of armour he was putting on.
“That is your heavy duty armour Korrin, you wont need that heavy burden, why don’t you swap it for the lighter armour” Kris suggested.
"It would be good to practice flying in it," said the dragon with a shrug.
“You sure you can carry me AND this armour now Korrin?” Kris asked as he finished strapping it all in.
"I'm fine," insisted the green dragon.
Soon both dragons were off, patrolling the skies around the base, Amanda and Tarok went in one assigned route and Korrin along with Kris another, keeping in the close perimeter of facility 7.
Kris was a bit concerned with Korrin carrying the heavy Armour and himself and was worried the dragon was once again piling stuff onto himself to prove a point.
" you sure you are ok Korrin?" the man asked again, he had asked about every 20 minutes as they patrolled and Korrin seemed to lose patience.
The dragon turned a yellow eye to his Attilu, "I am fine," he said sternly. Getting up into the air had been a bit more difficult but now with the wind under his wings the dragon seemed to be doing alright.
Kris remained quiet throughout the patrol and the uneasy silence seemed to be picked up by the green dragon, sensing the man’s confusion and unhappiness.
What's wrong?" Asked Korrin, looking back at his Attilu, "is something amiss?"
"Its fine, lets land and get the armour off" Kris said to Korrin in a neutral tone.
Korrin sighed and descended to the air dome, having to beat his wings harder to slow his landing as the armour pulled him back to solid ground.
Once they landed, Kris got the armour off and stored away, making sure it all went back, his mind had ideas in his head on how to challenge his dragon, but none of them seemed worthy.
The man sighed heavily as he signed off on the screen and made his way alone back to his quarters, not really in the mood to chat or explain anything to anyone.
"Kris, stop," huffed Korrin as he jogged after the man.
Kris stopped and turned around, "yes Korrin what is it"? He asked.
Korrin looked at Kris with an odd expression upon his face.
“You're acting weird. What's wrong? You've been off since we went out on patrol," replied the dragon, looking down at him.
"I’m not acting weird, just tired that is all,, was going to have a lie down in my quarters" the man said, making a move ot head to his quarters, he would not get far however.
Korrin trotted up and stood in the man's way. "I can tell you're not telling me the truth. I can feel it through the link, Kris. What is wrong?" He insisted.
Kris sighed and looked up at Korrins fierce expression.
"Well...i was chatting to Amanda and i think you have out grown allot of challenges I’ve given u, I need to find new ways of allowing you to grow and develop" he said with verbal honesty.
Korrin looked confused and frustrated all at once. "What does that have to do with your attitude today?"
Kris had to explain as he frowned back at the green dragon.
"I don’t really feel I’m being a good atillu for you ok? I sort of want you to do well here but I feel I not been good for you" he admitted.
"What!" exclaimed Korrin, exasperated. "How could you possibly think that?"
Kris answered back in a firmer tone.
"I dont know its how i feel ok?" kris replied bluntly to Korrin’s question.
Korrin let out a slow breath, looking at his Attilu. "Don't feel like that. I feel nothing but pride being your guardian." he said honestly.
Kris seemed to show a smile, glad his dragon was proud.
" Well im proud of you too tank, i did say to Amanda we have to have a rematch" he said to the green dragon.
"One day," nodded Korrin firmly.
“Yes one day” Kris said as they walked back to their quarters together, the awkwardness soon melting away from them both.
Korrin nudged Kris's head, ruffling his hair with a snort, "I promise I'll make you proud."
Kris chuckled lightly.
"I know you will, you always do, i doubt eastern and western mountain dragons bump heads on kilara" Kris said.
Korrin considered this, "Maybe, I wasn't on Kilara long enough to know."
"Gave him a test last time, despite size differences, what a hit too" Kris said patting him on his shoulders as things between them seemed to return to normal.
"We'll see how it goes next time," replied the dragon
Kris nodded in agreement.
“Yes we will, lets gets clean up and rest” Kris said as they made their way back to their quarters, in a bit of a better mood than they had during the patrol.

Alex had reverted from his causal manner to his defensive state that he possessed in times of distress and threat on the island.
The commander was likely the most easy going of those running across the globe but that did not make him inept at his job. His branch had always been one of the least busy in terms of threats but now with the dragons involved, it seemed to be like a beacon for trouble now.
Alex ensured that all base defenses and protective measures were up and operational, working closely with brogan’s teams and those of local law enforcement, trading any news or information that might bear weight on their situation.
Keeping the dragons occupied was the next on the list under staff and facility safety. While Tarok seemed to do a little better within the confines of the building, Korrin was a dragon built for action. His instinct to keep everything and everyone within his circle of protection was being restricted by the commander’s need to keep things low key.
For the time being he made the pair of dragons conduct drills, testing their ability to outfly smaller shuttles that gave chase, or hone their ability to use their surroundings to lose enemies in pursuit.
Both dragons had their own talents to bring to these drills. Tarok was more likely to be about to outrun slower aircraft or out-maneuver them in tight quarters. Korrin was able to use his colouration to hide within non-urban environments or bully his way through obstacles.
The more the two of them worked together, alongside their riders, the more and more apparent it became that the group worked well together. They were a well built unit were individual strengths could make up for the other’s separate weaknesses.
Alex was proud of their teamwork and ability to work together and for not it looked like the drills were working to keep boredom and worry at bay.
Alyia had worked some sort of Magic to keep James working from home but he knew that the man would get cabin fever sooner or later and no amount of guardian insistence would keep him homebound. There was a limit that even her magic couldn’t surpass.
The days following the attack were quiet, no news coming in despite Alex working the team to find anything out that might get them any closer to figuring out who had taken their men down.
Tara had been a great help in the labs. While her contributions were minor and of little consequence on the larger scale, it helped the staff out, not having to deal with the minor things of their work. Besides, Tara took every opportunity to learn whatever she could within the labs of the island facility. Despite what was going on, the girl kept up her studies and filled out her textbook questions in her downtime away from the labs. Nothing was going to keep her back from reading in the very least.
When not occupied in the labs or reading, Tara volunteered to help keep the dragon’s gear and harnesses in order. With growing dragons it was a tall order to keep the tack clean and free of fraying or damage but the girl didn’t complain once, helping out wherever she could. Being able to work alongside dragons certainly helped motivate her.
Icarus and her mother kept tabs with the girl, calling her once a day to check in and make sure that all was well.
Icarus didn’t seem too impressed that their ranch home had been invaded by a number of personnel to ensure their safety but didn’t grumble too much. He knew that if there was an attack on the home during daylight hours, there was very little the night striker could do, confined to the darkness of his converted barn. He grudgingly accepted their temporary stay but was nothing but polite to their new guests.
On the fourth day Tarok was putting away his gear with Tarok, their riders having gone off to clean up and submit their patrol reports. Their patrol had been a little more eventful today which had given the dragon’s some purpose.
A small pleasure craft had overturned in the straight and dumped a number of people into the water without life jackets.
Alex had urged caution, in case this was some sort of distraction or setup but once they had gotten close the situation had become apparent.
Partiers had overloaded the boat and caused it to capsize after some foolishly risky driving. Because Korrin couldn’t easily take off from the water, he circled above while Tarok landed in the gentle waves and helped scoop people up.
Amanda was less the impressed with the situation and the lack of responsibility displayed by the revelers but by the time the coast guard arrived they had gotten most of the people out of the water.
Tarok now kicked off a length of kelp that had gotten tangled around his ankle.
“A bit more exciting today, eh?” he asked the green dragon.
Korrin grunted and nodded as he dumped his harness into the bin that would ensure it would get the sal****er washed off.
“Hopefully they learned their lesson today,” he replied.
“Oh I’m sure they did. If we hadn’t been around they would have been in the water for quite a while before the other rescue vessel got on scene.”
“Yeah, that’s true. Hero’s once again,” said the green dragon. “Saving idiots has really worked up my appetite. Should we go see if Kendra has something cooking in the canteen?”
The coastal nodded, “Yes, that sounds like a great idea actually.” He replied as his own stomach growled.

The next day James And Alyia arrived back at the base, considering there had been no further details or any odd incidents, this had led to James resuming duties on the base and Alyia being close by.
As usual they took the shuttle into work and got on with admin work, surprisingly the man had not allot to do and this allowed him to perhaps work on other things with Alyia helping and supplying him with latte’s and a healthier eating alterative to muffins and bacon sandwiches.
Alex was busy working in his office, so far there had been no reports of any odd or unusual activities in Vancouver or BC, their mystery assassins remained elusive and there had been no further progress from Dr Charles or RCMP in Vancouver, the evidence still read the same and despite additional patrols, there had been nothing.
While Alex worked away there was soon a notification of a secure communication coming from Vancouver Police, it was the channel secure and private between Torchwood 7 and Brogan the liaison officer for the police and Torchwood organization.
Alex was quick to pick up the call, "hello, commander Robinson here."
Brogan appeared on the screen before Alex.
“Good to see you Alex, I just wanted to keep you up to date on things here in Vancouver and BC area, we have at current nothing of interest to inform you about except a precious cargo delivery passing through the trans Canadian highway in the BC area” Brogan said looking at the electronic documents.
"Anything noteworthy?" Inquired the commander.
“Well, I am no technical whizz but I know it’s a large electronic part, a large capacitor or something, its suppose to be on its way to that new Fusion reactor outside of Vancouver?, for cheap renewable energy” Brogan explained.
Alex made a face of disapproval at this, "oh yeah, headed into the interior I imagine?"
“It’s going through via transport, with a minimal escort, as to not attract attention to it, I can send over the schematics for your Doctors to look over it if you like, it is due to pass through the city in about 2 days” Brogan informed Alex.
"Please do," said the commander, "I appreciate all the help over the past while. It's been a difficult time not knowing what is out there."
The man nodded in agreement.
“I understand, patrols reveal nothing, obviously anything we got we are sharing with you at this time, I send the details on a secure channel, so your Dr Hinton and co can see if perhaps we need to re look this risk” Brogan said.
"Excellent. Thank you, Brogan," said Alex gratefully with a nod. "We appreciate it. I'll let you know if the doctors think it a concern”.
“Of course Alex, Brogan out” the man soon vanished from the screen.
With nothing going on Kris had not set an alarm to get him up at his usual time, instead the man was in bed, wrapped in his blankets and snoring lightly as the lights in the quarters were dimmed.
Korrin had been up for over an hour and had decided he had enough of waiting for his attilu to wake. A stern stare did nothing to rouse the man so the dragon wedged his nose by Kris's shoulder and promptly rolled him nearly off the bed.
Kris woke up all of a sudden, a little confused but then sensed and saw Korrin.
“Urgh..Korrin what the heck!, I wanted a lie in you overgrown lizard” the man said grumpily.
"You did sleep in. It's over an hour past when we usually get up," he insisted.
Kris looked at the clock and sighed.
“Ok ok Korrin, I’m up, since you would not let me go back for a lie in, you know what today will be, little patrol and then sitting and waiting, same thing Alex always does” Kris said getting up.
Korrin frowned at this, not pleased with the days itinerary. "Go back to bed then."
Kris chuckled and shook his head lightly at Korrin’s words.
“Well you got me up now, let me get a quick shower and we see what is going on” Kris said to the frowning green dragon before him.
Korrin sat down and scratches behind his crest, "alright," he replied.
In the afternoon Alex left his office to gauge the opinion of the 3 doctors who were in the labs continuing their analysis and investigations on the Torchwood 7 weapon.
Alex stepped into the room with his tablet at hand.
"Hey everyone. I've got a new project. Brogan has sent me some information on a special transport that's been delivered in about two days time. Some piece of a reactor that's being built. I would like you guys to look it over and see if there is anything we should be cautious about."
Dr Charles looked at the tablet that Alex handed over to him and he looked at it carefully as Dr Hinton looked at it also.
“Oh, it’s a transforming stabiliser, used to stabilise the magnetic reaction of the core, keeping what is essentially a mini sun in a stable environment” the doctor said to Alex.
"Now that sounds like a horrible idea. Whatever was wrong with hydro? That never had the potential to sound like a disaster waiting to happen," said the commander. "So this stabilizer, is it something that could be considered high risk?"
“Well sir, potentially it can have a risk, by bizarre coincidence, this part is also used for Professor Baxter’s portal, it uses this part” Dr Hinton explained to the commander.
“Hrmm, so a part that could be used for a reactor or constructing a portal” Dr Charles added.
"Why would we have something like that out this way?" Puzzled Alex, "it sounds like it's enough of a big ticket item to maybe draw the wrong kind of attention."
Dr Charles was about to answer as Dr Hinton explained to Alex about the part specifically, the doctor had an idea and perhaps it could work.
Soon the man spoke.
“Sir, I just had an idea, perhaps we can use this to our advantage, if there is a high ticket item and it might attract the wrong kind of attention, perhaps the attention we be unable to find on our own with Brogan” the doctor said.
Alex brightened at this thought an idea coming to life, "you're right. This could be potentially something we can use to our advantage."
Dr Hinton nodded.
“We could do a switch, have an identical lorry transport, one of us drive it with light police escort and have the dragons out of sight, if anything hits it they be there” Dr Hinton suggested to Alex.
“Korrin been looking for action, he excel in this, I think Kris has been having to stop him chomping at the bit to do something useful” Dr Charles said.
Alex seemed to mull over the pros and cons of a mission like this.
"I think it would be a good idea..." he said, finding the words even as he thought more about how it all could go down, "it would be to our advantage. We can set the stage and if something happens we would be prepared for it."
"I think Korrin is big enough to put a stop to anything, his scales are in great condition and Tarok is fast" Dr Charles commented to Alex, it had been true that Korrin seemed to be getting cabin fever because of the current situation they found themselves in.
"The dragons are still young, Doctor," said Alex, "And while Korrin is the muscle of the operation I don't think it's a fair assessment to say that he could put a stop to anyway," he said with a bit of a smile, "But you're right. We'll have the dragons take part but not without backup."
"Jon and Brogan can provide air support in the hornet, we can strike at these people and take the fight to them" Dr Hinton said as a plan brewed.
"That's if they even show up," said Alex, "whoever attacked us might not even be interested in this thing. But whatever the outcome we will be prepared. Call it a drill if nothing goes amiss."
The men agreed with Alex analysis of the situation, if anything it would be a change of scenery at best.
“I could design an emitter to go inside the lorry, so it would be as if we had something quite valuable inside, whoever wanted to swipe it would have to physically open the back to find it was nothing there” Dr Hinton offered to Alex.
"That would work if you can make it happen," said the commander. "It would be the perfect trap."
The men continued talking as Alex suggested they met up with Jon in his office to continue the discussion and perhaps speak to Brogan about this, then once the plan was sorted, they would inform the dragons.
Alex and Dr Charles left the labs and went to look for Jon who be in the command centre with Nicholas.
The dragons seemed to know something was up when their commander walked into the room before disappearing to speak with Jon.
"Something's going on," said Korrin.
"Just wait, I'm sure we'll find out soon," replied Tarok.
Kris noticed as well as Jon and Dr Charles were following Alex into his office, it made the man a little curious and he could sense the dragons could sense it as well.
“Wonder what all that is about, Alex seems to have a purpose and calling Jon into his office, perhaps they got something” Kris theorised.
"I hope so," said Korrin, "anything would be good at this point."
Kris smiled lightly sensing Korrin was alert.
“Might be tasked with a special mission to collect sea shells for Alyia” Kris lightly teased the dragon to break the tension.
Korrin snorted at this, not impressed but Tarok chuckled a bit. "She'd be pleased."
“Or..maybe we have a far more riskier mission, decorating James house with Alyia, if we paint the wrong colour, James might get angry” Kris lightly laughed.
"What's happening?" Asked Amanda, confused as she stumbled into the conversation at an odd point, "were remodelling?"
Kris shook his head.
“No no, trying to get the tank to cool his engines, Alex has called in Jon and Dr Charles into his office, something is going on, I am sure we be told soon enough” Kris said to Amanda.
"Oh," replied the woman, "I understand your eagerness to know, Korrin. I'd like to know if there are any developments too."
Kris gave Amanda a look, he had been trying to calm the green dragon down, he was alert and focussed, noticing every small detail and looking for action, Kris had wanted to make him relax and settle but Amanda had made him back alert again.

Amanda looked from around her dragon as Kris, giving him a confused expression of “what‽” as she lifted a hand in question.
Kris subtly gestured to Korrin and the intense focus the green dragon had at the entrance to the offices.
The woman turned slightly and saw that Korrin was indeed hyper focused on the door in which Alex had disappeared into. Like a giant predatory cat with his yellow eyes and unshifting gaze. Realization came over her and she mimed an apology.
Tarok looked down at her, “What are you doing?”
Amanda made her gesture into an attempt at controlling the flyaway hair around her temples.
“Nothing,” she replied, patting his blue scales.
Korrin suddenly got to his feet, hearing the clock of the door even before Alex appeared.
The movement startled Tarok who’s sail snapped up in the sudden appearance of their commander.
Alex stepped out into the hall as Jon left to go get things in order.
"Command room please, everyone." He instructed to the dragon team.
"Told you," Kris said to Amanda who then followed Alex to the command room. Korrin took the lead, wanting to get in on what was happening.
“I said sorry,” Amanda mouthed back.
Korrin looked over his shoulder but did not slow down his pace towards the command center, "told her what?" He inquired as they walked.
"Nothing for you nosy, lets just get to the command centre" Kris replied.
Amanda smiled at this exchange and turned with the others as they stepped into the large room.
"Alright, team," said Alex as he turned on one of the large screens. There was a pause as he brought up a wide map of the province’s main highway. "We've got an opportunity on our hands that we're going to take advantage of."
Kris looked at everyone and then back to Alex, " what you got for us boss, we are ready whatever it is," Kris said giving Korrin a pat on the shoulder. The dragon sat down and looked over the screen.
“Alright, so I was given some information about a high value cargo transport from Brogan. I ran it by the doctors and they were surprised to find that this specific cargo is a custom part used in the portal to Kilara.”
The dragons seemed surprised at this. As far as anyone knew, there was only one portal in the world and it was specially designed by Professor Greene of T7. Why a duplicate of this part is being produced for a reactor, I’m not certain but we do know it’s a high value item. It’s movement through the province is being kept low key but it might be something of interest to those with less than moral ideas.”
“The people that attacked us?” asked Korrin.
“Perhaps. As it stands we still do not have any motive or suspects behind that attack but if anything could go wrong in the next week there is a possibility that it might revolve around something as rare as what’s going to be hurtling down the TransCanada highway in two days.”
“So you said we had a plan?” inquired Amanda.
Alex nodded, “Yes. While there is no guarantee that this truck is a target, it wouldn’t hurt to be prepared and have ourselves a little stakeout.”
Korrin smiled at this. He liked it already.
Alex continued, pointing to the yellow marked road on the screen.
“So, I believe that the stretch of twelve kilometers from here to here, is where the transport would run into trouble, if trouble is its fate. My plan is to have the dragons here and here,” he said, tapping on two different circles, “And fly along the path out of site. Should anything go down we will have the dragons go in, backup with the shuttle and havoc. I’ll also be coordinating with a section of Brogans team in case things go sideways.”
Korrin rumbled in approval at Alex explanation.
"I think me and the tank got this, I think its about time we go on the offensive" the man said
"Please keep in mind that there is no guarantee that these guys will even show up. Just that we're taking the chance that they might," warned Alex, not wanting them to get their hopes up for action. “We have no idea if anyone is after this high-ticket item but we will consider it a drill if nothing happens.”
"Good enough for me, if there is a chance, then we must take it right?" Kris assertively said.
Alex nodded, "We'll come up with the rest of the details later today. I've got someone headed out now to drive up the route the transport is taking to get us some info. For now I want you to ensure your gear is ready."
"We will sir, you can guarantee that, Korrin will have his heavy armour on" Kris said knowing the dragon had been training himself to fly while carrying it.
“Great, don’t forget yourselves as well,” he said, pointing to the two riders. “Everyone needs to take precautions. I’ll call for the team to gather once we have more information and then we can head out and prepare for a trap of our own.”
“Got it, boss. Come on, Blue, let’s get ready.” said amanda, as the dragons began to wind up for their newest mission.

Now with the plan under way the team dispersed to get ready, Korrin already seemed to be chomping at the bit to get going and to bring however had tried to kill them to justice, the dragon had an air about him now that reminded Kris of Forge.
However, the dragon was still young and was rough round the edges when he became focussed on a job in hand, his usual self was gone, replaced with a warlord like mentality, unlike Tarok who kept cool and balanced in these situations.
Kris walked alongside the green dragon as they made their way to the aero dome, to get Korrin and himself suited up for the task at hand, with other preparations now under way.
"It will be good to finally do something productive." Said Korrin.
Kris turned to look up at the green dragon and gave him a funny look.
"You do other productive work Korrin, doesn’t have to be charging into situations" Kris said.
"This FEELS more productive," corrected the dragon.
Kris was quiet for a moment, as he thought of his response, the dragon’s focus was strong, he was battle ready and was focussed on the task at hand.
Kris wanted to at least soften this seriousness from the green dragon, to reduce tension of the whole situation.
"Dont worry, I wont ask you to be lifting the lorry up or throwing cars" Kris said teasingly trying to lighten the current mood surrounding them, the tension in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Korrin gave him a weird look, "alright."
Kris shook his head as they made their way to the aero dome, once there Kris opened the large storage cabinets where the dragons armour were kept, all hung up neatly, labelled for Korrin all the bits that would form the protection for him, along with Kris own kelvar composite armour with scales added for added strength.
Taken from the shed scales of the dragons, hardened and used in with the armour, something that Professor Melina had shared with Charles.
"Make sure you have your armour, the arm and leg pieces too. Not just the vest and helmet," instructed Korrin.
Kris shook his head lightly, looking back at Korrin.
“Bossy over your own Atillu now is it?, but yes I wear the gear that goes with your own heavy armour, as long as you can carry me” Kris replied.
Korrin took a bit of a breath, realizing he was being a bit demanding, "well I'm certainly not going to make you walk there."
“Glad to hear it, come on lets get this armour on you” Kris said as he got all the parts out.
Korrin stood as if he was a stone statue as Kris put on the heavy armour upon the dragon, some parts were heavy and Korrin had to help with the heavier, thicker plates that would be at the front and his underbelly, to protect him
Soon Kris got all the parts on the dragon, the dark steel match his scale colours as he stood there, as a steel beast in his thick armour, worn for max protection.
Kris stood back and smiled, folding his arms, pleased with his work and how his dragon looked.
"I dont know about those people, but you with your armour on and war harness scare the **** out of me Korrin" Kris said with some verbal honesty in his words, looking up at Korrin.
"I look intimidating?" Asked Korrin, curious?
“Very, I think you make even Ardon quake in his scales” Kris said with a small sly smile upon his face.
Korrin smiled but then frowned, "but... not too scary? Right? If the public saw me... they wouldn't think I was a monster?"
Kris shook his head.
“No no, the right kind of scary, for our enemies to fear and others to cheer” Kris replied.
Korrin sat up a little straighter at his, "good," he said with a hint of pride.
Kris then put on his armour for the challenge ahead, strapping in his Kevlar armour and also fitting the battle harness with weapons, first aid kits and other little items.
Tarok paused when he came in, Amanda nearly bumping into her dragon. She looked up and saw kris and korrin all decked out in their heavy duty gear.
"You look like some special ops or what or something," commented Amanda. "Fierce."
"The helmet makes you look angry," said Tarok with a grin, "no one is going to mess with you."
“That is the idea, haven’t you got your armour all sorted out?” he asked.
"We were getting other things ready," she said passing him their communication headsets and a a bag of supplies.
"It won't take us long, especially if you help," she said to Kris as went to grab taroks leg bracers and began to strap them on.
“Sure I can help you out” Kris said, giving Amanda a hand to get ready and to kit up Tarok who had slightly lighter armour but it was to offer the dragon quick movement as the dragon could get out of trouble quickly.
Alex walked down to James's office and knocked on the open door, leaning in.
"Hello, Alex," said Aliya cheerily, looking up from the calendar that she and James were organizing, "come in."
"I need your help, James, and your influence over some of the media outlets," began the commander.
The Scotsman looked up from his laptop as Alex asked for a favour.
"Who dooo ya need killin " James said as he got his mobile phone ready to dial a number.
"Not quite that," said Alex, suppressing a smile at the man's eagerness to rip someone a new one.
He quickly explained and plan and what the dragons were prepping to do.
"So," he continued, "I need a piece done about the cargo. Make it seem appetizing for anyone out there who might want to take a swing at stealing the damn thing."
James had listened in to what Alex had asked.
“Soo, ya want me too tell those leeches in Vancoover that there is soomethin tasty, be as vague as possible, too attract attention to this Lorry” James replied back to Alex.
"Exactly!" Said Alex.
"That certain can be done," said alyia, confidently.
James looked at the dragoness before him.
“Get that big book of media contacts Lass, I fancy dooin a bit of spin” James said as it seemed all systems were go with the media officer.
Alyia supplied the contact and Alex nodded.
"Knew I could count on you. Send me whatever the stations begin reporting so we can have it as reference please."
Jamie was already dialling a number on the sheet and James gestured for Alex to get lost as the phone dialled.
“Hello, get Jon Donovan now” James said, after a main media contact as Alex left.
Alyia had trotted out the door after Alex, stopping him in the hall. "Thank you for letting us help. He's been a little bored with the lack of events lately."
"No problem Al" began Alex but paused as shouting came from the office. He gave the dragoness a wry smile. "Good luck."
"Thanks, time to fetch a coffee I think." She said with a light laugh, turning to head down to the kitchens.
Alex returned to the command centre and took to his usual spot at his desk. "Jon, is your team ready?" He asked. "And status on the dragons please."
Jon looked up and nodded to Alex question.
“Yes sir, had confirmation from Brogan, the decoy Lorry will be leaving the depot shortly, we got the route all mapped out, Brogan’s havocs will provide cover from a distance, with support for our dragons there, do you want me to go into the hornet and provide air support?” Jon asked the commander.
"Yeah I'll have you fly on the south side of the route," said Alex.
“Ok sir I get the Hornet ready and get ready to launch” the man said as he went off leaving the two agents to man the command centre, Dr Hinton and Dr Charles would be there to support.
Soon enough Dr Hinton arrived with Dr Charles as well to offer support in the command centre while Jon flew in the hornet.
Tara has trailed behind doctor Charles, hoping to find out if there was any way to be useful.
"Commander Alex?" She said as they entered the room. "What can I do to help?"
Alex looked at her briefly before pulling out a chair at one of the stations.
"You can keep an eye on these cameras here." He suggested. "An extra pair of eyes can't hurt. This is life footage from the route the decoy is taking."
Dr Charles looked and gave a knowing smile as Tara sat down and Nicholas showed her how to control the cameras using the keypads in front of her, the trap and plan seemed to be fully underway.

Soon enough, Tarok was outfitted in his own gear. Composite Kevlar armour added an extra layer of protection to his scales. Korrin was more heavily armoured naturally so this extra defense was important for a dragon like the coastal. His already deadly toe spur on the inside of his hind paws was made even more cruel looking with a sharpened steel cover.
Across their necks and stomachs, flexible yet protective material that could shift as the dragons moved was attached to the more solid, resistant armour along their backs.
Tarok now sported a new helmet that made him look like some steal beast. The illusion of sabre fangs like Korrins jutted out of the lower edge, adding a protective shield against the vulnerable throat.
Both dragons had communication devices built in and a little green light along the back indicated that all systems were working.
Amanda whistled, “All decked out you two look like gladiators.” She said, standing back to admire their work, smiling at Kris to see if the man approved as well.
"Tarok looks stunning, that looks really good on him," Kris said complimenting the coastal
“They both do,” nodded Amanda, tightening her own greaves, etched along the back of the hand with the Torchwood logo.
Just then Alex’s voice came from the facility entry of the airdome. “Riders ready?” he asked, standing with his tablet in hand.
“Yes sir,” said Amanda and Kris in unison.
The commander nodded, “Good. We’re ready to roll out. Start point coordinates have been sent to your devices. Follow the route Westbound and stay out of sight until the signal is given. The route in red is our tracking on the decoy.”
"Understood sir, we be on point," Kris replied.
“Jon will be providing aerial backup out there in addition to Brogan’s team on the ground. Good luck out there.”
Amanda climbed up and settled into the saddle, clipping the safety strap to her built in harness of her own body armour. She stood up in the stirrups and looked down to see if Kris was nearly ready to take off.
Kris jumped on up into the saddle and got strapped in, checking his weapons in his gun holster.
"You all set, Tank?" Kris asked Korrin
The green dragon rolled his shoulders in reply as Alex hit the buttom for the airdome to open above them, “Go get ‘em!” he called before walking briskly off back to the command center.
Tarok lifted off first, and took off into the air. Korrin growled as he heaved himself and his weighty armour off the ground after the blue coastal.
It was still morning and the dawn was painted with the bright colours of an early summer day. It would take them a few hours to fly out to the starting zone but the transport wasn’t set to make its move down the vulnerable path until early afternoon.
"Easy big guy, we don’t want to expend vital energy getting there, we may need it for other means," Kris said.
Korrin slowed down a bit, realizing the wisdom of his rider’s words. He was just too eager to get to their mark that he forgot to rein himself in.
Amanda had looked over her shoulder and realized they were setting too fast of a pace and signaled Tarok to slow down too. They had time enough to get there and wait, this part wasn’t any race.
A few hours of flying saw them pass through close to the mountainous road that the decoy truck would be taking. Just past a place called Revelstoke the mountains rose up high on either side of the highway.
Tarok then tilted his wings, slowing to fly alongside and just above Korrin so their wings wouldn’t tangle.
Amanda pointed to the snow shed tunnel that was marked as a potential point of attack.
“Amanda to Kris and Korrin, there is one of the marked points just up ahead. We’ll have to keep an eye on that one on our way back down. ”
Korrin nodded and followed Tarok as he took them higher up where they couldn’t be seen at a great altitude.
Another half hour passed when they finally arrived to their starting point.
"Kris to Amanda, we arrived earlier than expected, the lorry isn’t due to begin its route for another hour, I think resting the dragons might be advisable," Kris said via the secure line.
“Agreed, Tarok will find us a spot to land out of sight,” her reply came soon after.
Tarok signaled the other dragon with a flick of the patterned tail sail after his eyes scanned the surrounding area.
Korrin nodded and tilted his own wings, turning in synchronized movement with the coastal as they went off towards a towering peak.
Tarok landed gracefully, his hind legs naturally designed to cling onto rocky cliff faces of the coast.
Korrin had to slow himself considerably to land but the blue dragon had done well to find a flat enough spot for the tank of a dragon to settle. Small stones and rocks went skittering down the sheer drop-off as Korrin folded his wings.
Unfortunately, there was no place to land to get a drink without risk being seen so the dragons had to go without for now.
Amanda offered her dragon a small splash from her own water bottle but Tarok shook his head, taking a step closer to the edge and looking down.
Around them was a breathtaking sight. Rocky mountains reached up in to the sky all around and a few small glacial lakes dotted the valleys around like brilliant blue gems.
Down below was the pass where the road snaked its way through the mountains and to the east rose the famous Banff provincial park and the province of Alberta beyond it.
“Almost time, guys,” said Amanda, securing her things and making sure that her weapon was still there at her side.

Brogan was with the decoy lorry which would be used along the route, with Dr Hinton’s sensor placed inside the empty trailer to emit a signal which would be from external sensors that the part was inside, it would also give off a signal at an electro magnet signal to simulate an e band signal, which would make anyone scanning that something very interesting was inside.
With the lead shielding around the trailer and inside, it would appear nothing out of the ordinary, brogan would be in civilian clothing and be accompanying the lorry driver to go along the route, on the Canadian highway.
“All set?” he asked the driver.
The man nodded lightly.
“Hope whoever or whatever been causing problems will take the bait, you sure your friends will be patrolling around?” he replied back.
Brogan nodded confidently.
“Yes, they waiting for us, we best get moving” Brogan said as the two men got into the cab, the lorry was a sleek, streamlined design, to cut air resistance and of course with it having panels around the sides, meant no one could get stuck underneath.
The engine started as the driver got comfortable, once they were underway, they were joined by two Vancouver police squad cars and a light riot vehicle armed with cannons which could shoot at ground and air targets.
“Well lets see how this goes” Brogan said checking his gun, making sure he was prepared for all eventualities.
Where the dragons were stationed, waiting for the decoy lorry to come along the planned route, Kris took a look down at the road below, they were so high up the cars looked like ants.
“It looks a long way down, I would admire the views but least we have a vantage point” Kris said looking down again and giving a little gulp in his throat.
"We were flying a second ago but you're worried about heights now?" Said Korrin, turning to look at his rider curiously.
Kris gave a sheepish look.
“Well I feel safe with you, well on your back, not on the edge here, but it won’t be long I’m guessing” Kris replied back.
Korrin nodded, understanding but silently pleased that he seemed to be a beacon of safety for his Attilu.
Amanda looked at her watch. "8 minutes by my time."
Kris checked his watch and then heard a familiar voice over the headsets over the riders and the dragons.
“Hornet to crew, the parcel is on the move, I’ve downloaded its GPS onto your tablets, it is on the move with 3 squad cars and one riot dual cannon vehicle behind it, look for a very sleek looking blue lorry” Jon said as the tablets beeped as the downloads had come through.
Amanda gave it a quick glance and showed Tarok before stowing her tablet away and making sure she was still securely clipped in.
"There's the hornet there," said Korrin, spotting it and gesturing with his muzzle. "Flying a bit low don't you think?"
Kris squinted and could see the ship Jon was in.
“He is flying low and using the mountains as cover, to scramble radar signals, so he can remain invisible to tracking, there is the lorry there” Kris pointing to the decoy on the road.
The lorry appeared with its escorts along the road.
"I see it," said the green dragon, tracing its path with his eyes. "Do we move out now?" He asked, gripping the ledge with his talons, ready to fly.
Kris looked around to ensure no one was around or following the transport, he looked down and then to Amanda.
“What do you think Amanda, should we follow from a distance, you guys be scouting and we follow it” Kris asked.
"Yes, we will follow along behind this tree line here through the gap the creek makes. The trees will screen us from view as we make our way west." Replied Amanda.
The dragons followed the lorry along the route planned out, so far it had been quiet, Kris had been in awe of the views and scenery was breath taking, Kris noticed Korrin’s eyes locked onto where the lorry was going as he flew above.
Soon the nice scenery and the pleasant flying was boring the green dragon, as Kris felt the dragon become a little grumpy, they been following the lorry and its escort for over an hour and there was so far nothing.
"Still nothing, “grumbled the green dragon, disappointed in the lack of action.
Kris looked down at the lorry travelling along below them and looked at Korrin, sensing the dragons frustration, he wanted action and this was turning into an anti climax.
“Well, look on the bright side, you got some exercise and your excelling at burdened flight” Kris replied back to the green tank.
Korrin seemed to mull this over, "yes I do suppose you're right." He agreed though begrudgingly.
Kris patted the side of the dragon.
“Cheer up, steak tonight after all this, Kendra wanted to treat you and Tarok for this important job” Kris replied.
Korrin seemed to brighten a little at this suggestion, "that is kind of him. I hope there's some of those roast potatoes that were served last time. I liked those." He said, thinking that he would be next to ravenous by the time they made it back home.
There had been no action either from Jon in the hornet or from Amanda and Tarok, it was so far turning out to be as Alex had feared, a dull run.
"Amanda to Kris," came the woman's voice over he communicator, "still quiet up ahead so far but we have the mountain pass to fly through before we reach the end of the route.
Kris nodded lightly.
“Understood Amanda, have you checked in with Jon and Brogan in the lorry?, any news at all?” Kris asked, to see if there had been anything they missed.
"They just reported in. Nothing seen on their end either. All quiet. I don't think anyone took the bait." She replied.
Kris sighed lightly as it seemed that would be the case, least the dragons seemed to at least think it’s a training exercise.
“Ok, keep eyes peeled, Kris out” he replied as Korrin continued on.
Again the next 45 minutes of the dragons flying above, watching the lorry travel along the motorway and there was no action, they were crossing another high peak of mountains approaching before they got into the city limits of Vancouver.
Jon heard a beeping on one of the screens and it soon went blank with signal lost, it seemed something was jamming the standard communications.
“Hrmm..odd” Jon said switching to Torchwood signals and bandwidths but nothing seemed to work, they seemed jammed too and not operating.
Amanda went to check the route on her tablet once more but as she touched the screen it went blank, a signal searching logo popping up, unable to find a connection. "Kris?" She tried to ask on the communicator but heard nothing but static.
Tarok seemed to sense her sudden shift in mood and looked over his shoulder at her as he flew.
"Be alert blue. It seems like communication had suddenly gotten cut out. Slow out and get your eyes on the truck." The woman instructed.
“Come in? Jon come in” Brogan said and could not get an answer, he decided to switch to the short range emergency channel as the driver gave a quick glance.
“Problem?” he asked.
“We see” Brogan replied.
As her dragon flew Amanda switched her communication device to a different setting, enabling emergency short rang signals to be passed through. "Kris, Kris come in."
After some static Kris seemed to come back on.
“Thank goodness, we gone blank here, only just been re-established communication with Jon and Brogan, their communications and GPS are down” he said to Amanda.
"Mine too. Do you have eyes on the truck? Blue and I are still a little far ahead but falling back now." Replied the woman.
“Understood” Kris said as he looked down to see the lorry, the road seemed to be unusually quiet as it was driving on the highway.
“Go lower Korrin, closer to the lorry, I got a feeling we are about to have some action” Kris said as he checked his gun and tightened his straps on his armour, the man looked around, keeping a keen eye on their surroundings.
The dragon growled in reply and descended slightly, nearly touching the treetops with his wing tips as he spotted the truck up ahead.
Jon lowered the hornet down as the other dragons descended to keep close to the lorry, as a precaution, with communication down it meant something was up.
“Jon to command to you read over, this is Hornet calling command” Jon tried to get back communication but was having no luck at all as he tried adjusting the frequencies and radio waves but nothing but static.
As Tarok narrower the distance between him and the transport truck he seemed to suddenly look around.
"What is it?" Asked Amanda, looking upwards to where her dragon was looking.
"I hear a ship." He replied.
"Kris, Tarok hears a ship but I can't hear anything. Do you see anything?" She asked into the communicator.
Kris looked around but couldn’t see anything.
“Cant see anything, nothing sighted” Kris said as Jon responded saying his radar could not pick up anything.
Soon the noise became more apparent until a large aircraft appeared, a very light blue which almost made it invisible to the naked eye. Blending in almost perfectly into the sunny skies of British Columbia.
It was indeed a large aircraft and looked armed with large cannons sticking out of either side of its hull as it came charging in.
Tarok made an alarmed sound as suddenly a gunship appeared.
"Amanda!" He shouted but his Attilu was already urgently passing along information to Brogans team and Kris.
"It's headed your way," she told the other rider and Tarok wheeled around to race towards them.
The gunship approached the convoy at speed as Brogan looked out of the window to see this craft.
All of a sudden some doors opened and a black rocket was launched, falling down towards where the lorry and its escorts were heading before flying away.
Korrin saw with sharp eyes something had been dropped by this unknown aircraft.
"Kris did you see that?" Something left the ship as is headed for the ground there," said Korrin, pointing
The black rocket landed on the ground and disintegrated with an electrical shockwave appearing, it hit the lorryt and the cars and soon the vehicles came to a halt.
The driver tried to get the vehicle started but it came to a halt.
“Whats the matter!” Brogan said as he took his earpiece out from the static.
“must be some electrical disabling weapon all power is out” said the driver, as Brogan looked to see the two cars and riot van had the same issue.
The dragons and riders suddenly winced as static crackled loudly within their ear pieces. Korrin barked out in alarm as they saw that all the vehicles suddenly stop.
"Emp!" Crowed Tarok.
Jon was also in peril the EMP hit the hornet and the ship powered down, losing its thrusters as Jon had no control as the ship fell quickly.
Korrin suddenly lunged forward, realizing the hornet that Jon was piloting was now without power and hurting towards the ground.
Jon was trying to escape using the eject system but the EMP used had knocked out the working internal battery packs used for this system, he could not escape, he frantically tried but with no luck.
Kris looked worried as they got closer.
“****, the hornet’s got no power, he can’t eject!” Kris said with worry as they could see Jon looking to try and eject, the EMP had knocked out everything, which was strange as the eject seat did not usually use allot of power and should go regardless, whatever was launched had knocked out everything.
Tarok was fast but Korrin was closer. He pinned his winds and dove, letting his armour pull him earthward faster. As he approached the hornet he snapped open his wings and grabbed the machine at its air intake. He heaved upwards, using his wings as a parachute to try to slow down the hornet and prevent a fiery crash.
Kris held on tight as Korrin used himself as a parachute for the hornet as Jon tried to manipulate the wing flaps to control the craft to the ground.
“I don’t think this will work Korrin” Kris said apprehensively as he clung on tightly.
Korrin couldn't slow down the large machine completely but managed to slow it down enough that the resulting crash didn't rip the thing apart.
"Jon?" He shouted, trying to get the cockpit open.
Jon gave a thumbs up, while looking visibly shaken he was alive but he could not get out the cockpit, still trapped inside the ship.
"Cover your face," instructed Korrin before the dragon pulled back his fist and slammed into into the rear window. The glass splintered and he ripped it clear with his talons. He hauled Jon out as gently as he could and jumped into the air to get them to safety.
Soon a black vehicle appeared out of nowhere, there was no markings and no licence plate, the windows were tinted ast pulled up alongside the riot van, the windows rolled down as a spray of bullet fire before heading off towards the front of the lorry, as Tarok approached the roof of the vehicle seemed to open up as an anti aircraft gun appeared, it opened fire on the coastal as he tried to come in to help, seeing the enemy vehicle.
Tarok had tried to swoop in and check on the other downed vehicles but suddenly shots were fired and the coastal nearly twisted over on myself trying to get clear of the hail of bullets.
Amanda leaned into the saddle and clung on tight as he dragon rolled left before rocketing upwards and away.
Soon three men got out of the car, dressed smartly in black suits, wearing dark, tinted glasses which made them all look the same, with ear pieces connected, they looked like secret service as the 3 men pulled out their guns in unison and opened fire on the squad cars.
“****” Brogan said as the lorry driver ducked and Brogan went to get his weapon, these guys were no messing about..whoever they were.
Tarok had come back round to aid Brogan and what was left of the escort for the lorry, much to Amanda’s disapproval.
"Don't, Tarok!" Said Amanda through her teeth, pulling on the dragons leather collar that held his armour. The dragon didn't listen, however and descended into the fray.
"Don't shoot!" He growled.
The agents turned to look at the bipedal dragon before them, they looked at one another briefly before they reacted.
In a movement quicker than lightning the coastal whipped to the side, narrowing avoiding the shot. He snapped his teeth angrily in response.
Tarok was under fire and could not stay at these close quarters, the weapons used were larger, well built guns and these men seemed to have good accuracy.
Abandoning his tactic, Tarok shot off into the air, keeping Amanda protected and away from the gunfire as he fled to safety.
Soon the agents split off, now Tarok was dealt with, they two opened the cab and took Brogan and the driver hostage, Brogan tried to resist but these guys were unnaturally strong, their expressionless faces made the lieutenant worry.
The other agent went to the back and opened the back, seeing the transmitter emitting a signal, the agent looked unimpressed.
“A decoy, we have been tricked” he said, his words lacking emotion or any sort of normal human reaction as he held his ear piece and seemed to look around the empty trailer.
Korrin landed solidly on the ground and growled menacingly. Keeping his wings up slightly to shield Kris and Jon upon his back he took one step forward to square himself.
The agent turned to see Korrin approach and withdrew his gun from his holster, aiming the weapon at Korrin.
The green dragon snarled aggressively.
"Don't try it," threatened Korrin, his jaws beginning to glow with firelight. "I'll roast every last one of ya.
The agent opened fire, not put off by the green dragon’s threats of being roasted alive, Kris took cover behind the protection of his dragon.
Korrin reared up on his hind legs, flaring his wings to shield Kris and Jon and he released a stream of fire at their assailants.
The agent backed away and soon was joined by the other two agents who had injured Brogan and the driver after they tried to resist, Amanda saw the chaos below.
"What the hell, Tarok! Get in there!" Shouted Amanda. Tarok snarled and turned on a dime unleashing his own flame in a bright stream.
The agents with inhuman speed dodged the blue stream of flame as the other two agents fired at the coastal.
Tarok flew up and away, readying his fire for another pass as Amanda reached for her handgun and took aim.
The dragons were under constant attack, the agent’s guns were powerful and only by the density of their armour were the two dragons doing ok.
Korrin roared in outrage and charged the man, teeth flashing as he snapped.
Korrin charged towards the agent, the man clenched his fist and threw a punch at the dragon’s chest plate, Kris and Jon had to grip hard as the force of the impact made the dragon go backwards.
The dragon snarled in surprise as he skidded to a stop. He touched the dent in his armour before roaring again, fire pouring from his jaws.
The agents dodged the fire and returned fire using their guns, again Korrin raised up, using the thicket armour plates to defend the two humans on his back as Bullets hit the armour.
Tarok suddenly dived out of the sky, landing on the street and snapping at one of their attackers. Amanda fired from her saddle, trying to take out another of the agents.
One of the agents appeared quickly with exceptional speed, grabbing the coastal dragons tail and with inhuman strength threw the bipedal dragon into the trailer door with a thump.
Tarok yelped as he hit the truck but immediately got to his feet, trying to see if his rider was okay.
"I'm fine!" Yelled Amanda, angry that she had dropped her weapon and rather shaken. "Get them, Blue!"
The one agent approached and opened fire, Tarok defending his Attilu bravely and sparks came off the armour, whoever these guys were, they were not afraid of killing anyone or dragons, these bizarre humans had speed and strength unlike anything the team experienced.
Tarok swung his tail to try to clear a path before trying to swipe at an agent but snarled when he realized the man had caught his arm with inhuman strength.
He tried to wrestle it free but to no use. Amanda gritted her teeth and leaned in her saddle, making to try and stomp on the man's fingers but suddenly they were thrown sideways.
Throwing out his wings, the coastal caught himself and slid to a stop on his hind legs.
Suddenly his scales burst with light dazzling around their edges and from his jaws.
The 3 men seemed to regroup and then approach the dragons, not giving the team a rest from the onslaught that they had given them so far, these men had no expressions as they walked towards where Korrin and Tarok was.
Tarok drew in a deep breath and Amanda felt the back of her hand and wrist grow warm as her mark began to glow.
"Blue..." Amanda said warily but the dragon wasn't listening. As two agents approached the dragon roared and a blast of light tinged in blue rocketed from his jaws.
Kris looked up as a loudf noise came from Tarok, it was the coastal dragon’s sonic roar, which launched two of the agents into the air and hit the back of the lorry hard with a bang. The one agent remained and went to draw out his gun but Korrin was upon him.
Korrin's Brathille ignited moments after Tarok, flaming a shimmering green from nose to tail.
He roared and slammed his fists into the ground in front of the third agent and the concrete under his talons exploded and ripped from the earth towards the man.
The agent hit the ground before the other two agents as they slowly got to their feet, obviously rattled by the dragons unique powers that were thrown at them.
Tarok seemed charged and wanting to throw himself at the now gathered opponents once again. Instead he bared his sharp teeth at them and growled menacingly.
The men stood before the dragons as Kris and Jon had their guns out, as well as Amanda, the agents looked back at them, only the one in front of the other two men were smirking lightly.
“Interesting indeed…” he said as he put his hand to his ear, where the ear piece was as he looked up into the sky.
Jon was confused until the sound of engines got louder from above.
The dragons looked up as the gunship approached. Amanda turned in the saddle to Kris, "Tarok is fast. I could disable one of the engines and take it down."
Jon was about to give Tarok and Amanda the go ahead when a light blue circle engulfed the three agents and then they vanished, but it seemed they left something behind, a circular shaped object was now in view, in the spot where 3 agents had been before, some objects turned on the circular object and a timer of 30 seconds appeared, it soon became obvious what this was.
“Bomb!” Kris shouted in alarm as Jon grit his teeth.
"****! We got to move now!" Jon said as Brogan helped a beaten-up lorry driver to Korrin.
Tarok made a noise of alarm, sail snapping up at sight of the bombs.
"Get them up," Korrin urged Kris, kneeling so that the men could scramble up onto his back.
Kris helped the two men up with Jon helping, Korrin now had 4 men upon his back.
"Hang on...you cant carry all of us" Kris said as Jon jumped on.
"We don’t have time...take off!" Jon said as Tarok was up in the air already, the timer soon ticked to 20 seconds, they did not have long at all, they had to get out of there and fast.
Korrin grunted and tried to get airborne but with the extra weight of the men plus his heavy armour he was too heavy to get air under his wings. Trying again saw the same results even with a running start.
"We don't have time!" Shouted Amanda from above as Tarok swooped low over the green dragon. He grabbed Jon off Korrin his back and Amanda reached out a hand to help him up into the saddle. Less burdened Korrin could now take off, slow and laboured.
10 seconds remained on the counter as Korrin was airborne, Kris looked down from where they were.
"Keep going tank, we got to get out of here, 10 seconds remaining, climb!"Kris said as they were up in the sky.
Korrin grit his teeth and urged his wings into overdrive, driving themselves higher into the air and away from danger.
Soon the counter reached Zero as a smiley face appeared with a message “Have a nice day code TW013” and the next thing it exploded.
The shockwave from the explosion swept over both dragons and Tarok spun around to ensure that everyone had made it out.
Korrin was behind him but out of the blast radius and still rising.
"Everyone alright?" Called Amanda.
Kris nodded as did Brogan as Korrin had made it but the dragon had put allot of effort into getting away quickly as his scales looked slick with sweat.
“Head to brigadier point, there’s a police and medical outpost there, used for mountain rescues, we can get help and support there” Brogan said as they set off there towards the outpost.
Kris looked around to see if the gunship was following them but there was no sign of them, all the man did see was smoke rising from where they had been seconds before.
The man took a deep breath, thankful they all got out there alive, the look on Jon’s face as well said it all, if the dragons had not thrown themselves into the fray, they would all most likely be dead, the man was grateful they had amazing dragons, who had bravery, valour and would do what they could to protect their team, they indeed had some special dragons.

The brilliant blue glow was beginning to fade across the coastal dragon’s back as they flew away from the burning wreckage. His hearts still pounded with adrenaline, however, the excitement and alarm from the quick serious of events would last with them for a while. Sirens could already be heard as someone must have called in the fire, or perhaps the rest of Brogan’s men were proactive in light of the communication shutdown.
Amanda could see that there were a few bullet holes in his wings, just like Korrin’s. small streaks of blood trailed back to the far edge from being swept away by the wind of flight. It was one of the few places armour couldn’t shield and often in tangles like these the dragons wings where the limbs that suffered most. Some the looks of it the armour that covered the rest of him held up nicely though it was now scuffed from where he had been thrown.
“Once we land, Blue, “I’ll patch you up.” She paid, patting his shoulder.
“Okay,” huffed the dragon, drained from the fight on the highway.
“And you, you’re going to be sore after that crash,” she told Jon as she swiveled in her saddle to make sure he was still okay.
"You young dragon, never cease to amaze me, I guess that was the elusive sonic roar I had heard about?" Jon asked Amanda as they flew back to the brigadier point.
The dragon just nodded, too worn out to speak, luckily his rider took up the words he was too tired to say.
"Yeah but that was different from the first time he did it," said Amanda. "The blast radius was far larger, I think. There was more of that blue colour too."
"Blimey, must be as he is getting older, the attacks or whatever it is increases, still it helped us out, you both did great back there," he said.
"Yeah he did," said Amanda,
"We did. We all did," corrected Tarok, knowing she was one not to accept compliments easily.
Amanda smiled slightly but then suddenly cursed under her breath
"My gun. I dropped it when Tarok was thrown into the truck. Did you see that? Those weren't men. They had superhuman strength!" she said, now coming to realize the shock of it all now that it was over.
Jon tried to calm Amanda down, realizing adrenaline was leaving her body and the full scope of what just happened was upon her.
"Easy Amanda, its all right, you both did well. Tarok is fine and we are all here, we sort this out, just breathe," Jon said.
Amanda turned in the saddle with an incredulous look on her face, “I am breathing! But those guys! One punched Korrin so that he flew backwards and whipped Tarok by his tail into the decoy truck. Those aren’t normal men. Then they were freaking beamed up like some sci-fi nonsense!”
"I know, whoever or whatever they were, it was not normal, despite this Tarok did well and so did Korrin, you all did" Jon said, before patting Tarok on the side to try and lighten the mood.
"Looks like that arm wrestle with Jack strengthen your forepaws" he lightly joked.
“That one guy tried to rip the damn thing off,” grumbled Tarok, feeling the soreness in his shoulder already.
As that group spoke, Korrin tried to keep up to the faster blue dragon. The brigadier point. The team members there plus Alex and those still on Quadra were likely panicking after the communications were cut out.
"You ok big guy?" Kris asked, leaning over to talk to the green dragon.
"Yeah," he panted, "You? Is everyone okay back there?" he asked, referring to his passengers, having forgotten to ask in the chaos. His mind was whirling with everything that he had just witnessed. This was no normal fight with your average thieves. This was something different all together and that knowledge unsettled the dragon greatly.
"We are good, the driver is a bit shaken but bumps and grazes," Kris said as Brogan nodded. The dragon didn’t even think that he had a passenger that had never flown this way before but all seemed well. He didn’t sense any panic from those perched on his back.
"Thank you for saving us Korrin, you guys are an asset to everyone" Kris said.
The dragon gave a ghost of a smile.
“I’m just glad we didn’t lose anyone.” He said.
Soon enough they neared the outpost and a woman flagged them down as they landed, a wide space cleared for them.
Tarok let Korrin land first, more burdened with passengers than he before he touched down.
“Sir, we dispatched crews to block off traffic north and southbound on the highway, when we couldn’t contact you,” the officer said to her superior. “Communications wouldn’t go through,” she added.
“They hit us with an EMP,” supplied Korrin as his rider’s dismounted and Kris helped Brogan and the driver off his back.
"Get forensic teams there asap, get a medical team up here for the driver and contact the EA" Brogan said as the officers rushed off to carry off the orders.
Amanda removed her communicator and stuffed the useless thing into a saddlebag before beckoning tarok to lower his head so she could remove his helmet. Once it was off he shook his head, thankful to be free of it.
The sounds of boots made them turn as a young man jogged up to Jon, communications device in hand, “Your commander, sir.” He said, offering it to him.
“Glad you all made it back to the point. I have a shuttle inbound to bring you back to base. I’m sending the doctors up shortly to help with the investigation. We’ve just gotten word of what went down. Not exactly as planned but I am glad everyone is coming home safely.”

We’ve just gotten word of what went down. Not exactly as planned but I am glad everyone is coming home safely.” Came Alex’s voice.
"Understood sir, Kris captured some footage on his cell, with the craft that attacked us...might be useful, but the area around the lorry has been destroyed," he replied.
There was a brief silence on the other end as Alex took this in. “They weren’t messing around. Make sure that footage gets back to use safely as well as the lot of you.” Replied the commander. “We’ll see you shortly.”
Just then the loud whirr of the shuttle could be heard a ways away.
“Let’s go home, guys,” said Amanda, putting her hand on Tarok’s blue scales.
